It's all about the senting! The rabbit running through the weeds and thickets, is putting alot of sent on a lot of cover, in which the hounds can follow! You put that same rabbit in the field or in the woods, and it has less cover to rub against, leaving less sent! Not to mention, it's probably much drier in the woods and field, escpecially with the leaves falling.
Failure to prepare, is preparing to fail.

groundhog holes, hollow logs, rabbit gone to ground in one of these? I once had a hound that seemed to quit after running about 50 yards to a dirt road, only in this one place. One day one of the guys with me shot the rabbit crossing the road and swore he hit it. We found it in the bottom of a hole in the ground about big enough for a rabbit, about a full arm's length deep, right at the other edge of the road hidden by an overhanging bush. Rabbits do weird stuff.

Ringtail,
Could you go to this place and video tape this happening for all of us to see.
Maybe then we could give you a better idea of what is happening?

I wouldnt get to close to where the place is where the rabbit is dissapperaring tho.
When this happens do your dogs seem scared or just confused?

This question here has got me stumped but if I could see it actually happening, maybe I could give you my view point.

By the way I would take somebody with me when I went there or I would at least tell my wife where I was going and when to exspect me back.
