Strting Pen Rates?
What is the going rate to take a pup to a starting pen? How long do you leave your pup there? How big are most starting pens? Do the people at the starting pen feed your dogs or do you need to bring food?

My experience w/ starting pens is that they feed your dog while it there. The going rate seems to be about $50 / month around here. Some dogs will take less than a week and others up to a month.

Shocked at your cheap prices! I pay $100 per month which includes feed.
After the pups are well started in the 2 acre starting pen, they graduate to a 40 acre pen with an old pup trainer. Usually after the month is up, your pups are ready for some light gun hunting!

I agree with Adam. I start pups and charge $100 to get the job done. It normally takes about a month to get a dog that is not started to run well enough to hunt. Even after a month they'll still be inconsistant.
I'm even thinking about raising my prices cause I've got so many that I don't have time to run my own dogs.

I think there is a problem with sending a pup to a starting pen if that is all the person has to offer! How many times have you heard beaglers preach on "once that pup starts opening on track, get it out of the starting pen and into the big pen where they don't get so many sight chases. I wouldn't send my pup to a $25.00 pen if that's all that they had to offer. OR I would tell them to call me after the pup starts to open on track so I can come pick it up!

The guy I take my pups too has a good set-up.
He has a 1/10 of an acre for getting pups to recognizing rabbit scent.
He then moves them to a thick five acre pen free of holes to get them trailing rabbits.
Once they get the hang of it in the five acres he moves them to a 40 acre pen with mixed hardwoods, pines, open fields choked with briars and a small stream going through it.
He keeps them a month and supplies the dog food for $70/dog for a month.
I have been pleased with the results.
