Australian Sheep Dog. That's the reason DNA testing is now required. ;)

My bluetick also has a wirey type hair. It is probably just a trait of her blood line she is Turbo breeding.

Coat
A close, hard, hound coat of medium length. DEFECTS--A short, thin coat, or of a soft quality.

I don't have any wire haired blueticks. Must be in the lines that you have seen. Here are a couple of pics of my hounds. Some a hair a little longer but no wire hair.

LOL You tell Oakhill! LOL

That "wire" hair you describe is the correct hound coat. It isn't wirey like a terrier, it is just hard, close and med length. Thats what they are supposed to be! It is for protection from the briars and the eliments!
Here is a picture of one of my blueticks. He has the med length and hard close coat. He also has good brush on his tail. I haven't seen him bleed yet and anyone that knows these Georgia briars know they are HARD on a hound!

Looks like a Blue Heeler to me. Will they herd livestock? :)

Seriously, I saw a discussion on one of the bulletin boads quite sometimes back. Someone who seemed to have a good knowledge of genetics stated that there is a genetic disposition for dogs with the blue color to have thin hair as well as some skin problems. A friend has a couple of young bitches that he bought who have the blue ticking. Their coats appear thin and rough.

They are refering to the BLUE color, not BLUE TICK. The blue (bb)is a dilute in the black gene making the hound grey on the blanket and not black. Some beagles NOT ALL do have problems with their coat but you do see problems more often in the blue dobermans. Check out the various beagle events for the blue dog competition to see some examples of this color.

The blue tick is the ticking pattern gene. Tt, TT. Skin problems are not related to the hounds coloring however diet, health care and parisites can cause ANY dog to have a thin coat and skin problems. There may also be red mange or other issues in those hounds bloodline that may explain why your friends dogs are having trouble.

Southern got it right. Blue and bluetick are two completely different colors. Sometimes the blue hounds are referred to as pink or mousy gray. They sometimes do tend to have skin and eye problems but not all. Most I have seen didn't have it.

As for the bluetick, they are just like the tris except for the ticks in the white area which sometimes are soooo thick that the white turns blue.

I have had three tris and a lemon and white in my family. Each dog has a slightly different texture to the coat. All are related too! It is how the genes get expressed in each individual dog. Diet plays a roll ion the quality of the coat- when I was kibble feeding, the dogs produced more oil and their hair held the dirt more. The hair then felt stiffer or thicker. All very interesting! carolyn
