Chain Dog Collars

Does anyone use the chain dog collars with the name plates attached? I saw them in a beagle magazine but can't remember which one and who sold them. Has anyone ever had them hang up while hunting? Thinking about buying some if I can find where to get them?

I use the day glo collars. You can usually find them for a good price in hunting magazines. I wont use the chain collars. I have heard too many horror stories of beagles hanging themselves with them. I think I saw them six for $20.00, up here if I was to buy them seperate they are roughly 4.99$ a piece.

I use them and in some of the thickest brush cover there is anywhere.I can't use any of the other collars because I keep two dogs in the same kennel and they chew the collars off each other.I make my own using a choke collar and S hooks.I leave the ring on one end so I will have a place to snap the lead,I hook one end of my name tag to the ring and then measure the length of the collar to fit the dog,cut the excess chain away and hook this end to the other end of my name tag.Haven't had one chewed off yet and never have had one hang up.It's the choke collars used as such that cause the problems,the way mine are fixed they are no different than any other collar.

Your right Pappy, I have heard of folks making regular chain collars. When I think of chain I think of choke collars automatically. Guess I must have misunderstood this morning...

I was referring to the fixed chain collars not your typical choke chain collars. They have a nameplate attached in the middle and have a small latch at one end. I have seen them on a few hounds at field trails, but don’t know who sells them? That is the problem I am having. I have more than one dog in each kennel.

There is the slip check company. (573)-682-2597 It's called the lifetime dog collar. It has the nameplate and all. The ad is in the American Beagler every month.

I used to work for a man in Georgia that had over 300 foxhounds at one time. We used nothing but the slip check collars. Never had to replace one nor did we ever have a hound hang up. If you haven't tried these you should, it will be the last collar you will ever have to buy for that dog. Just my two cent worth. BTW I use them on my beagles too!

The fixed length ones are fine but NEVER use the slip type doubled back through the ring. Several years back, my father-in-law found his young pup hanging (dead) from his deck with the ring wedged in a crack. Apparently, she jumped off and it caught just right in the crack to hang her. He still expresses guilt and regret for putting the collar on her.

I used silver chain collars too. The thing I didn't like was all my dogs have white necks and the collars turned their necks dark grey where the chain touched.
I then went to a brass name plate and two S fasteners and bought a long length of hanging lighting lamp chain from the local lighting and lamp store and cut it off to fit each neck. It comes in all colors and sizes and the S fasteners match. It leaves no color on my dogs as it is either coated or heavy plastic. You could get them small and thin enough they would break if a dog was hung. They look good, light, and are cheap too.

Slip Check is all I use also. Never had a dog get hung up yet. I like the fact that your collar doesn't have to come off at trials to install a colored club collar. Where else would i have come up with a kennel name like CHAIN GANG!!!!!! If you install the collars to fit, not leaving them loose they will last for the life of the dog. If you leave them loose they will wear between links.
