Years ago ,Doc Skinner told me that he had bitch, her name was MillRoad Flower, when she was a pup, she wouldn`t stay in a 30 acre field, so every time she left the check area,he would take his red cap off and put it on the ground and go get Flo, he would bring her back to the cap,on a lead, let HER find the track,, evenually she she started to realize that the track was still there and not leave.....MillRoad Flower went on to win about everything see was in including her AKC Title of Field Champion,, went on to produce 5 Champions also,,, so, you can asist by not allowing them to leave the check area,,it might help.

Is your dog a pup or an all age hound? If you are talking about a pup, running it with dogs that hunt close, in a gunning situation, will probably bring them closer because most races end with a kill. If you run your hounds a lot in off season, they develop extreme independance because when they lose, or the rabbit holes, they will be some distance from you, and therby learn to start looking for another rabbit at the point of loss. They learn quickly that they don't need you to be part of their fun.
If you are talking about a mature hound, gunning with a good pack may help but it will probably take a shock collar.
Breeding/genetics is the key. If you start with pups from a line that hunts close then you usually won't have a problem.
