A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
I was just watching our local news and they reported that someone was poisoning dogs in our area. A woman had 2 pet beagles in her fenced yard today and someone fed them some bread soaked in anti-freeze. The woman now has over a thousand dollars in vet bills and the hounds ended up having to be put down. The worst being, the vet said the poor little fellas suffered a painful death.
There have been a few other similar incidents in neighboring citys recently where dogs have been fed meat laced with anti-freeze and with shards of broken glass as well. The authorities are investigating the incidents and I sure hope they catch whoever it is. And whoever is better pray that the authorities catch them before my wife gets a hold of them.
IF YOU LIVE IN THE TIDEWATER VA. AREA KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR DOGS!!!! Y.B.
If anyone knows the lady that this happened to, please give her my email addy goes@citlink.net. have her contact me and i would be happy to donate a pup out of an upcoming litter. maybe we could also start a fund to help her pay for those vet bills.
Yankee Bill, I live just outside of Richmond. We were hunting 30 minutes north of Richmond, when 3 of our beagles got poisoned. I lost one, my partner lost 2. They were bleeding through the anus. Also, we had 2 beagles get poisoned earlier this season that had to be put down.
Thanks for the replies guy's, that sure is a nice gesture Goes. I don't know who the lady is, I just saw a short piece of footage on the news. I know they won't release her name to me for privacy reasons, but maybe if I call the station, they can contact her and give her my ph.# and your email addy. I don't see where they should have a problem doing that. I'm semi imoble at the time, recovering from a recent back surgery and can't drive or be in a car for a couple more weeks, but I'll give the news station a call and see what I can find out.
Hi BJK, sorry to hear about your dogs, that's got to be an awfully tough thing to go thru. Do you know if they just got into something, or did someone actually poison them? I've got a Sister-in-law in Mechanicsville, she just moved again locally in that area, but if it's not Mechanicsville it's really close. When I get up and around again and finally get my hounds maybe we can get together sometime when I go up to "visit her " and do some running. Thanks again for the Ideas guy's. Y.B.
Nate,
Sorry to here of your misfortune. There are some real jerks out there! I hope they catch them before they harm any others and toss them in jail.

When my life on earth is ended....this is all I'm gonna say...Lord I've been a hard working pilgrim on the way!
Other than being just plan mean (putting it nicely) why would some one do such a thing?Maybe this was done by someone who lived close by and didn't like barking or something.Or perhaps some misguided AR's.I hope that they catch the person and make them drink an anti frezze cocktail
I had this happen to me last October while I was at a field trial. Someone came up to my kennel and put hotdogs soaked in antifreeze in their lots and by the time I got home several hours later two were already sick - ended up losing three before I got the situation remedied. I'm pretty sure I know who did this but without visual proof its just my word against his - one day he'll meet the man upstairs and have to answer for his actions.
Thought I'd just update you folks that may be interested on what's happening. I just spoke to the news reporter who covered this story and told him about Goes generous offer to replace one of the woman's hounds with a pup from an upcoming litter of his, and also possibly starting a memorial fund to help cover the cost of her vet bills. He was very impressed with the beagling community's kind hearted guestures and eagerness to lend a helping hand.
He did say however, that when he spoke to the woman yesterday, she said that she was too disdraught to think about replacing the dogs. I'm sure she has to go thru the grieving process still, but I believe she has children, so maybe she'll accept Goes offer. The reporter is going to contact her and give her my ph. # and he is going to give me a follow up call and tell me what she says. I'll keep y'all posted. Thanks again to all. Y.B.
Thanks for passing it along YB. This is a terrible act committed by terrible people. When there are so many good people trying to rebuild our beagle population of young hunters and then to something like this happens disgusts me. Well YB, if you should hear that she changes her mind, even at a later date, I will keep this offer open for her.

Hi again all, wow, I didn't realize dog poisonings were that frequent of an occurance around here, really makes you wonder what goes thru some peoples minds doesn't it. Just saw an update of this incident on the 12 o'clock news and found out the woman has actually incurred over two thousand dollars in vet bills.
Something that really disturbed me though, was they reported that someone had actually tried to poison the dogs the day before also, that time they tried using rat poison and broken glass. I'm wondering that if that was the case, why were the dogs made accessable for someone to repeat their attempt the next day? I'm guessing maybe noone was home during the day and she couldn't leave them in the house alone, but who knows.
Still haven't heard back from the reporter, or been contacted by the woman, but again, I'll keep y'all posted. thanks, Y.B.
