I was looking waaaay back in the pedigree of some of my dogs and saw a lot of yellow creek and Pearson creek. Does anyone know any details on what style and speed these dogs were?

Kim,

I would bet the Yellow Creek of today, which is owned by a gentleman by the name of Bob Brown of Science Hill, KY is a lot different than what they were back during the time the dogs in your pedigree come from. Yellow Creek of today which Mr. Brown runs, is more UBGF style hounds. Which for the most part are conservative, lower medium speed, line control hounds. I don't have a clue how Yellow Creek was back during Yellow Creek Sport's days, however I'd imagine he was a lot faster than todays YC dogs.

As for Pearson Creek, many blame the breeder of them for the ultra-change of brace dogs that could actually ran a rabbit into what we have today. In other words, Pearson Creek's are blamed for the walkie-talkie brace dogs of today. Most say Pearson Creek Carson had the biggest influence. George Nixon is the gentleman that bred Pearson Creek hounds. I have a 1975 Hounds & Hunting that has Carson listed at $200.00 for stud fee. Consequently most other hounds were going for $50.00 I guess he was "da dog" back in those days for brace people.

On a different note, did my friend offer any insight to you on starting a SPO club near you guys?

Take Care...

Hey Jamie I also see the name FC Gray's Linesman several times throughout the pedigree, What do you know about him? I am still researching the possibility of starting a MWBGA club here in NC, we have quite a few SPO clubs in this area, and Several clubs that run PP and LP. From what I have seen the LP dogs should be competitive in this format.

Very few beaglers today have first had knowledge of Greys Linesman. According to Elmer Grey, Linesman just happened to come along at a time when beaglers were trying to get a little more line control in their hounds. Grey according to the Linesman Story, owned several bitches that were pretty fast, and when bred to Linesman produced dogs that were popular at the time. If I remember from reading the story, the first mating was an accident, and the rest is history.

In regards to Pearson Creek Carson and also Wind Creek Limbo, two of the most prepotent sires of the seventies for brace trial dogs, I don't believe they were responsible for the deterioration of the hunting beagle. They produced excactly what the beagling public demanded. It was the ribbon chasers who screwed up the beagle breed.
Any rabbit hunter who breeds to a stud, just because it has FC in front of its name is following the same pattern.

I owned a beagle sired by Pearson Creek Casanova. It was a good conservative medium speed dog. I killed a truck load of rabbits with him. He was part of a four dog pack that was the best I have ever owned. This was when I had to kill my limit every time out. I seldom failed with this pack. Most people point their finger at Wilcliffe Boogie for slowing the dogs down to please those ultra line control enthusiasts.

Jim,
I remember back in early 1960's, Pearson Creek dogs running rabbits to the gun, were med. speed. Good rabbit dogs.
