Blood In Stool

My six wk pup has small amounts of blood in stool. Can anyone tell me what might be causing this.

I posted the same question a couple of weeks ago. Some said it could be caused from straining and it should clear up. My pup's stool cleared up in 2 or 3 days. Was kind of clear with a mucus with a little blood. Should be fine but keep an eye on it.

Mark,
I'd have to go with Bunnie. I had a pup with coccidiosis this year myself.
Take it to the vet. He'll probably prescribe Albon.
Either way, I'd take it to the vet.

We bought a 1 gallon jug of Albon a few years ago. We add it to water of all dogs every now and then....just in case!

If it is Coccidiosis, you can treat it wilth "Sulmet" (Sulfamethazine Sodium 12.5%). You can buy this at most feed stores. Coccidiosis is a poultry disease and is very contagious (sp), therefore you need to treat all the hounds in pens close to the affected pup.
To treat, you just put the appropriate amount of Salmet in their drinking water for three to four days and that should take care of it. If you don't take care of the problem, it can kill your pup.
If you are in doubt, take him to a Vet and get him checked out.
Good Luck!!

Albon is about the same thing. They all belong to the "sulfa" drug family.
Albon is sulfadimethoxine.
Good stuff.

Just wanted to add that this is very common in puppies and that you can order the stuff to make your own Albon alternative from Revival.com... it is bitter though and the pups don't like it even when you add sweetener.
Or take a stool sample to your vet (call first to see if you can leave the pups home) and get the real Albon which pups think is better than ice cream! :D
