You have to learn the trcking system You can tell after awhile from signal strenth level of strength you have it on and so on It just takes awhile Icom is a good one just get a yagi antenna and a booster for it when you buy it You just have to learn the system but you can practice with it stick a collar in a known place go away from it and learn Theyare pretty simple The most difficult would be the Tracker systems I like Icom an Wildlife Wildlife works Works good also and is usually Cheaper You can get A trx 3 with yagi antenna mounted and 2 collars for @ $550.00 The icoms run a bit more usually unless you buy one used and then you don't know what you got I would recommend getting a longer lasting collar also you will pay @ $20 more but you don't have to get the batteries replace as often

I played around a little with an Icom when I was looking for a system at a local dog supply dealer. To be quite honest, I think you can find a much better system that is made for tracking than using an Icom and in the end come out cheaper anyhow. By the time you buy the Icom receiver, an antenna, an in-line booster, then buy collars, you'd be much better off buying a well made tracking system that is meant to work together. Here is a link to a used Wildlife Materials system at a good price (assuming it's in good shape).

Icom is the only box that can track all collar made for $3oo+ , Wilflife 2000 will only track 2 frequency 1000 collars on ether frequency, the price of this tracking box is over 1000 dollars . A quick track box will run you 930 + tax but it will not track 215, 223, 225 collars. Tracker start out 800 dollar . I bought Icom for 299, the booster for 40, and 3 element antenna and coax for 90 . I had not problem tracking no dog with it , which tracking system you buy you will have to play with it to learn how far a dog is from you or how close the dog is to you . But buy what ever tracking system you like and fill the best with . :D

i have an icom r-10 and i like mine also, you can track any collar out there with it----once you get to learn how to program it ,just turn it on, turn the knob to the collar you want to track and have at it.... it will take some time to get used to it but well worth the 300 bucks ;)
