A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
There is a corn field just down from my house about 400 yards. The corn is up about 3 - 4 ft. now so I took 4 hounds down and turned them out about 45 min. before dark. It has been dry as a bone here and in the 90's all week so I was not expecting much. But those dog got a rabbit up in a matter of minutes and ran hard for 2 hrs. before they started dragging back in for water. So try a corn field - may be the best running this time of year....the rabbit never left the field and didn't hole up.
On a side note - I have femle taking care of 9 day old pups. While I was listening to the beagles run in the corn field I heard a new voice chiming in. It was that female and she was keep up w/ the pack! She ran for about 15 min. before I could catch her and haul her back to the pups. I had fixed the gate so she could get a break from the pups if she wanted and forgot to close it when I went running. Got to love that kind of desire
We went to a spot next to the corn fields today. Just got back. First rabbit ran straight to the corn. We never left it after that. There are alot more rabbits in there than I expected. Our corn is about 8 feet tall and I couldn't see anything that was going on until a rabbit came by and then the dogs came crashing through. This was the fist time my one the females has been out since she had her pups. She didn't miss a beat, but wore out fairly quick. I had to pull her off and tie her up so she wouldn't have a heat stroke.
I know where I'm taking them next time.
Ran two dogs and a pup this evening the same corn field - jump a rabbit and ran it just about non-stop....never leaving the field. Just too hot here to run very long. Dogs give out pretty quick needing water.

Briar where in Middle Tn are you I am in Mt Juliet My beagles are in Jackson at my uncles house three of my coonhounds are here one in Jackson I usually hunt by myself
Steve3662, I see you are at Mt. Juliet, is that close to Fayetteville or Hartsville?I have relation which we visit a couple of times a year that live in that area(Old Bottom & Chigger Holler Rd.) Could stop by if invited to hear and watch hounds run. Just a thought.
Steve, thanks for the invite. Too used up to keep up with the 'coon hounds anymore. Beagles I could handle as long as we don't have to chase after them, lol. Sister-in-law works in Lebanon so you can't be too far away from there. A daughter used to live in Murfreesboro and we go right by there on our visits.Won't be able to stop by your place this trip, on a short string, with the wifes' job but maybe another time this fall ?
