Steve, the Free Dal program Lefgren-lane posted the link to does that for you. You DO have to build your data base and you also have to link the dogs to their parents. Once the initial time is spent adding dogs and linking them to one another the program builds the pedigrees for you. There are a lot of pedigrees found on World pedigree (a free online data base) and between the pedigrees that you already have purchased and World Pedigree, you should have all of the information that you need to build the pedigrees for your hounds. I have over 350 dogs on my kennel data base, plus also have the data bases of several of my friends that use this program. All in all I probable have 3000 hounds although they are not in the same file. I keep my kennel file seperate from the others but you can merge data bases.

The pedigree services that you pay for pedigrees (not counting AKC) buy the AKC stud books and add these dogs each year to their data base. I am not aware of a pre programed software that would have all of these dogs but if there were it would be outdated as soon as you installed it and would cost a fortune to keep updated. Not to mention, they don't show Champion titles from other registries aside from AKC.

Guys, I have tried and tried to build pedigrees on the World Pedigrees site and cannot figure out how to do it. They have alot of pedigrees that I had put in from Beaglepedigrees.com, however I cannot get this site to work for me. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated....Slaux.

Pedigree program

Post by Boomerx »

One of the best pedigree programs (in my opinion) is one that's actually for people. It's called Family Tree (the latest versions are the best). It works just like a dog program except that I find you can customize your printed pedigree better with colors and various shaped boxes. You can make the pedigree look really fancy.

I have a home grown one in Access. It is sort of plain jane. I need to fix some errors I get now that I converted it from 97 to 2003. You have to input the dogs, but it will print 5 and 6 generation.

I am Interested in some ideas when I purchase Visual basic. As of now I only have the pedigree section and some medical/expenses part. Want to add a calendar to make notes and such.......Days I run, tracking conditions etc. Any input would be helpfull...... Getting ready to add the picture of the dog the pedigree is of.

Keep em running

Dal Pedigree Program Instructions

Getting started.
The first thing you need to do is make sure you downloaded BOTH the pedigree program and the COI program. Both programs are found on the same page.
Once everything is downloaded look in the upper left hand corner and click on the word "file". A Box or window will open and you want to click on "new file". Figure out what you want to name this file and include .pdg to the name. Example, My file name is South.pdg. You will see a box with three windows. The name of the new file will go into the upper right hand box where you see the *.pdg. Just back space out the * and type the name of the file and click OK.
Once you have named your file, the next step is to create your data base. Each and every individual hound in your pedigrees will need to be interred one by one. This is time consuming but well worth the time after the program is ready.
Creating the data base
You should be in the append mode. At the top center of your program you will see three boxes that say Sire, Name and DAM. Each box is broken into three sections. You will ONLY be working in the NAME box at this stage. The first box next to name is a small box. This box is for pre titles like FC (Akc field champion) or RCH (ARHA Rabbit Champion) ext. The center box is for the dogs name. If your hound doesn't have a pre title just go to the center box. The Third box is for a post title like CHB (Certified hunting beagle (AKC UBGF title). If the hound doesn't have a post title skip the third box.
Once you have the hounds names and titles in place you can add any info on the hound that you choose like the AKC numbers, DOB, Breeder, sex, color ext. in the box at the bottom of the screen. You CAN DO THIS LATER if you choose. After you have the dogs name and info in place click on SAVE and CLEAR. The hounds name should appear in the box to the left. If the hounds name does NOT appear, you are in the wrong mode and need to click on file and change modes OR you entered the hound in the wrong box. After you complete your list, always save your information when prompted.

Modify
After you have added all of the hounds to the data base, you need to link the hounds together. To do this go to File and switch to Modify. Once in the modify mode find the hound you want to start with and click on that dogs name from the list to the left. The hounds name should be highlighted in Blue. When the name is highlighted, click the NAME button on the center of the page. That hounds name should go into the box by clicking the button. Next, go back to the list and find that dogs sire's name and click it highlighting it in Blue. Next click the sire button and THAT dogs name should appear in the box above the first hound. Third, find the DAM's name from the list to the left and highlight her name in blue. Click the Dam button. At this point ALL THREE HOUNDS should be in box to the upper center of the page. If everything is correct click SAVE and CLEAR. Repeat the process until every hound on your list is linked to the sire and dam.
Once all of the hounds are linked you can save the file and reopen it under READ ONLY. In the READ ONLY mode you can create pedigrees. You can also launch Visible COI to determine the inbreeding percentage of the hound.
Hope this helps getting you started. Just play with the program, its worth the effort
