Supplements For Pregnant Females

Supplements For Pregnant Females

I’ve been breeding and raising beagle pups since the early 1980’s. I raise anywhere from 2 to 3 litters a year. What are some of you big breeders using for supplements for you female once they are breed, and after they have the pups. I’m currently feeding Purina Hi Pro, but I will soon be switching to Purina Dog Chow. Hi Pro makes my dogs a little to hot in this weather.

I have 2 females currently breed. One is breed to FC Right Stuff Billy Boy, and the other is breed to NFC FC Postoak Little Nip Otis. They are one week along.

Yep, that is what I usually use. I usually give my females “Pet Cals”, but not for a while yet. I've had problems with females having C-Sections. I don’t usually start pet cal’s till the last two to three weeks prior to them giving birth. I don’t want the pups to get overly large prior to birth, just strong & healthy.

I wouldn't call myself a big breeder but I have raised alot of pups in the last thirty-five years. I haven't needed a "C" section since back in the early eighties. I have never used a supplement. I just use a good quality dog food such as Ole Roy Hi Pro. ;) and now I use Diamond, Green Bag.
The real secret to raising pups is using a bitch line that are easy whelpers and good mothers. The ones that have trouble whelping or won't lick their pups should be eliminated from a breeding program.
The dogs that needed a "C" section were bitches that were heavy in show breeding.

Has anyone tried “Missing Link Canine Formula”? It is suppose to be one of the best supplements on the market for pregnant females and puppies.

1lb is $16.95 & 5lbs is $38.95 through “Jeffers”.

1lb does one beagle for 60 days. Once open it needs to be refrigerated and it is suppose to be used with in 90 days.

We've used Dog Bloom and Milkade for years with great results from beagles to brittany's the pups are always healthy and the females bounce back quick and have plenty of milk.

There’s no show stock in my lines. I do though have beagles with very good confirmation, and no deformities. I would rather have females that need an occasional C-Section and have about 95% of the pups turning out to be nice gundogs, than to have good brood-bitches that are much poorer producers. I can have a C-Section done for between $200 & $210.

All my beagles but one male in my kennel are under 13”. My bitch line has NFC FC Jack’s Iron Mike fairly close. Iron Mike was a very big dog. For this reason I’m having an occasional large pup that blocks the canal. :)

Most of my bloodlines in my kennel now have some of the top-producing sires in the country as their fathers. These dogs are a little young to be considered for breeding. I would like for them to receive a 1st or a 2nd in an AKC licensed gundog trial prior to being breed.

I realize that sometimes a pup will be deformed or will get turned in such a position that natural birth is not possible, then a "C" section is needed. However, if you think that a bitch that can't have pups naturally is not a deformity then your're fooling yourself.
