I suspect its the speed of the best, big nosed, independent dog in the pack. If the fast dog is constantly over running, it slows the pack down, unless there is a special dog who runs the line and doesn't pay any attention to the over running speed demon.

So does that mean the hounds are running the lead dog rather than running the rabbit at whatever their ability allows them to run it at?

Ken, my buddy had a hound he called Sam yrs ago. We never knew his ancestry but he was big and fast, he always made my Blackfoot and Bredemeir hounds pick up the pace when we ran together. If you was on a hillside of briar and thicket, he made the rabbits come out run'un for their lives...lol
I don't think my hounds were running dog, but he motivated them to try harder...maybe we should have named him "The Motivator".
