worming question
Guys I have a female that I've waited all year to breed and finally had her bred three weeks ago I just got her home this weekend and happened to notice she has got worms in her feces bad right, she was wormed prior to the breeding, but now I'm just wondering what to do because you aren't supposed to worm them after being bred, I'm worried about her getting sick and the pups comming out dead or puny at birth, is there anything I can do to help her and the pups out? She's already on a really good food.

Re: worming question
No way should a bitch be expected to carry pups while wormy, Use safeguard or panacure and go ahead and worm her.

Re: worming question
I have used Drontal Plus on pregnant females no problems but I would check with vet.
Re: worming question
Worm your dog!!! When your pups arrive please worm them properly starting @ 2 weeks with nemex II (the directions are on the bottle). Give your puppies Proper vaccines at the correct age as well.Theres is no excuse for people not taking care of their pups and dogs whether they are a breeder, owner or a jockey. Good luck with your litter.

Re: worming question
You can worm your bitch with Strongidt from the vet, safe, and WILL not hurt the pups. Like Jude said start worming at two weeks.
Re: worming question
Worm her with Safeguard ( 1 cc. per every 5 lbs. of body weight ) 3 days in a row and 3 days after the pups are born let them lick a few drops off your fingers about once a week until they are 12 weeks old then start them on your regular worming regiment. Done this for over 10 years and never had a problem.

Re: worming question
Any wormer with pyrantel parmoate or fenbendazole is supposed to be safe for pregnant females.
Re: worming question
Call your vet, do yourself a favor.

Re: worming question
Well the vet said I have to wait until pups are born, said she has tape worms and the stuff used to treat them can give the pups birth defects, he said to just keep an eye on her make sure she doesn't get sick and keep her on a good food. This sucks, hate leaving her this way until February.
Re: worming question
Your vet may be right on the tape worms. Their are 4 kinds of tape worms and Safeguard only gets 2 of them but not the most common one in dogs so I think I would do as the vet says this time. I would however give the Safeguard now for hook, round and whip worms, an ounce of prevention.

Re: worming question
Give the safeguard. Safeguard Goat Wormer is dosed for dogs at: 1 cc for every 5 pounds. It's perfectly safe and will not harm mama or the pups. Our vet started us on this when Nemex didn't work. He said don't waste money on Nemex. For as wormy as the female is, I would worm her 3 days in a row to start to clear her up. You can start pups on the safeguard at 2wks old. The safeguard will safely remove only 1 kind of tapeworm common to dogs.
For other tapeworm issues, you have to use medication containing praziquantel and that is NOT safe for mama or the developing pups...nor is it safe for any pup under 12 weeks of age. It's incredibly harsh and can cause alot of damage if not dosed properly at the correct age.
Safeguard Goat Wormer is relatively inexpensive and a little goes a long way. After the 3 day worming for the mama dog, go to just one dose per month. When the pups are 2 wks old, start them on the Safeguard and dose only once! The only time you dose Safeguard 3 days in a row is 1) dog has never been on safeguard or 2) you're trying to get rid of alot of worms.
This is the regimen our vet has us on and we've never had healthier dogs and knock on wood...we've never had a pup with a worm issue that we've raised.
Good luck on the litter. You're doing a great job.
