Good Grief

Post by gus »

You guys get on the board one day belly acheing about puppy mills destroying the breed and the next day you are here defending a generation of beaglers who did more damage to the breed than puppy mills will ever do. How about a little consistancy.
Those gentlemen, who enjoy brace trials, have every right to enjoy their sport any way they choose. However, an acurate description of brace trial dogs does not denigrate the owner.

Well then, all dogs that skirt the line, cheat and babble around....

You know, the LP dogs, have almost ruined the breed.

What about the SPO dogs. You know, the ones that don't hunt and surely don't run with the intent to catch. They have also ruined the breed.

And last but not least, the hare dogs. The ones that are to cold nosed for us down here. They are downright aggravating to us down here so they to are hurting the breed.

Whatever. To say that someone's dogs are hurting the breed is ridiculous.

Last time I checked or asked one of the old timers, there seemed to be plenty of hunting stock around in the 60's and 70's, even AKC stock. Last time I checked, there were plenty of AKC clubs that run faster dogs, even down here. Litterally millions of dogs are hunted in this country every year so apparently they didn't hurt the breed to bad. Hunting stock probably outnumbers brace dogs 100 to 1 if not more so quit yall's whinning and putting down what others breed.

Oh yeah, I don't like lemon dogs or red ones or redtick beagles so I guess you that breed those colors are ruining the breed. Oops, don't forget you that breed 11" dogs too. I hate small dogs, not really hate but I like 14" dogs so you guys breeding anything under 12" is hurting the breed.

LOL

I almost forgot.

Any puppy mill, I don't care what style, speed or color they breed, is worthless and should be burned.

I will not back up someone’s rude comments on brace dogs or their owners, but the comparison between any beagle that you can hunt rabbits with and a brace dog is ridiculous. Brace dogs of old follow a track (one bark, one step, one bark, one step…slowly.), not a rabbit and do not jump – they are NOT rabbit dogs…period. They were not breed to hunt rabbits and the comparison makes for a poor argument. Still, there is no reason to put down a man’s hobby.

The reason for this post is I own a brace dog and he is the best little hunting buddy I have. I just wanted to find out how many other people have them. Maybe they would have some use for him if I decide to sell him.

As far as hurting the breed- there is no way you can hurt the beagle breed.....They only way to hurt the breed is to open hunting season on them and thin them out.....

Brace dogs are not trash dogs.....they do exactly what they were bred for. Just because you don't like doesn't mean somebody else doesn't.

I'm not a brace dog fan, but I must say I have never in my life seen a dog that can stay on a line better. I have watched these type dogs swing their rear ends around rather than take their nose off the line.

I think we are talking about different types of dogs. The brace dogs I've seen would take at least 30 minutes to go 100 yards -- seriously -- that it what I have seen. One step, one bark and don't get in a hurry. Sounds like your brace is not the same brace I have seen. The dogs I saw could not possibly push a rabbit.

When I say hunting buddy I mean a buddy not a hunter that pushes the rabbits.(my other dogs do that) He just helps find a track to run. He will will bark a hole in the ground and hardly move. He is a true brace dog.

I am not a brace dog fan either but he is my little buddy. He is really more like a pet now, but occassionally I will let him out with the other dogs. However he is no longer allowed to be in the field when my young female is present because he will teach her bad habbits.

Funny thing is when it comes to rabbits, he is extremely slow, but when it comes to deer, I haven't seen a faster dog.LOL which is another reason he is on lock down.

Here is the best way to describe a brace hound, they must walk a rabbit in a method to FOLLOW the game, speed is of No requirement, different areas , slower or quicker forward movement, the hound must have the ultimate line control, they must stay almost at the last barked scent, work the check to find scent and move off, the hound must be able to persue the line in front or in the rear in the same method,, smooth is what its about, the hound that has the best line control, best staying and continue to follow the track in a desired fashion of the 2 judges,,,,WINS..
YES, I ran and competed in the AKC Brace Trial for well over 25 years, yes, I judged alot of derby, sanctioned and Lic.trial,,,, I also was the PROUD owner of 12 Field Champions, Won the New Jersey State Championship 3 consective years with 3 different dogs in my kennel..
Today I still enjoy a smooth, straight hound of Med. speed that has stlye and ability to persue the game, Swamper and Al rabbit hunter and I ran dogs at the Ga. run and we sure did have one great day with the same type hounds..Thanks Boys......

That is the kind around here also. They open non stop and move forward very slowly. A trial brace is usually judged in abiout 30-40 feet with hundreds of barks. That's why the trialers themselves call them Hobby hounds.
They have one move that gets a lot of praise that I have seen several times and that is one dog wheelbarrelling another by going under its back legs and lifting the front dog completely off the ground and holding it on the back dogs back, so its front feet is all that's touching and they both still stay right on the line and open every breath, claiming the line. They both get points for that.
That's stickability.
They laughingly call mine rabbit herders as they herd a rabbit back around.

Ya'll know I like a little swinging and faster hound.
