Everyday with beagles?
I ve read a lot of posted on here about training pups and dogs and what is the best way. What I would like to know.Who trains beagles dogs all year long everyday? I would love to here there way. My friend down the road that's trains duck dogs. Its everyday, him and two more guys.Who dose this with beagles? I know a few that run almost everyday to keep dogs in shape but not just get down and train dogs. Re: Everyday with beagles?
I think more guys would train, but beagles are different than pointing dogs or retrievers. Most of us don't teach sit, stay, fetch, whoa and other commands required for other breeds. We don't train them to quarter a field, make multiple retrieves, or make them steady to wing and shot. IMO, training beagles is more helping them learn by running them as often as possible. About the only training is yard work: come when called, kennel or load, and maybe down or fetch. Just my 2 cents.

I don't think you can handle them and be with them, interact, too much.
Every day at feeding time I take young hounds out, let them stretch there legs and use it as an opportunity to interact with me. It tends to settle them early on, mature them some.
I teach all my dogs, "back up" in the kennel as I don't want them rushing the door upon feeding and or leaving to hunt. Of course, you have to work with some barking young hounds, my key word is "enough", they quickly learn what "enough" means if they continue to bark in the kennel..lol.
I also take time to call them back to there kennel and say "up", this is dual purpose, both for feeding time and loading up when leaving to hunt or finishing a hunt. I really don't think people realize how a dog can since the tone in your voice and even your mood. The more time you spend with the dogs the more you know there personalities and what makes them most comfortable. I know I fall short in this department, but am always working to be better.
We don't realize we are a "part" of the pack, and our interaction plays a role in them as well. I have read and researched this. We need to be the "pack leader" and you will see the response of your dogs. They are not a machine, but an animal with some emotions that can be altered both positively and negatively by how they are handled and treated.
I know my dogs go out to hunt and run a rabbit, they are bred for that, but they also want to please you and if we can figure out what makes them click I feel you get get there best out...JMO.
Good running and take care!

Re: Everyday with beagles?
I will have to let you know. I just made a 1 acre puppy starting pen for my two little females. Today is the third day they have been in the pen. The plan is for them to have atleast 2 chases in the morning and 2 in the evening. Until they are big enough to wear an e-collar and can run the line fairly consistent. This is my first starting pen and any advice would be appreciated.

JMaynard;
Keep us posted on your success. I plan to build a small puppy pen this spring too. I really enjoy starting puppies.
BCBeagles: I agree with everything you said. I'm not sure that was the training the subject inquired about. I try to get mine on a small bench every day to "sack them out" in horse terms. I stroke them all over, move their ears, check teeth as part of the "bench" competition. I also lift a foot as if pulling a thorn just to get them comfortable with the process.

Re: Everyday with beagles?
fellows about that puppy pen don t put to many rabbits in there.
Re: Everyday with beagles?
Thanks Rabbitatfarm I will. I am super excited about the pen. So far it sure seems like the way to go. Earl I figure with it being only one acre then one rabbit at a time will do. But if another rabbit gets in I won't complain. I figure I could run 4-6 pups at a time. As always any advice is appreciated.

Re: Everyday with beagles?
I have trained bird dogs, coon hounds, and beagles. Bird dogs is a 7 day a week, 365 days a year job. I always said you would wear out 10 pairs of boots and a national forest full of switches to train a good coon hound. Beagles are a lot easier on me. If it's in there all you have to do is give it a chance to come out. Teach them basic commands and spend as much time in the field as you can. The biggest thing that you need to do is be consistent with your commands and as BC said the tone of your voice. Consistency is key to training any dog to do any job. Get them out of the kennel as much as you can, handle them as much as you can, and run them as much as you can!
