Re: Some Opinions First Time
Filial degeneration - the tendency of an individual descendant of a bloodline to revert back to the average of that bloodline.
In other words if you breed two slower dogs that are both descended from fast dogs the resulting offspring are likely to turn out to be the average of the bloodline which would likely be faster than either parent in this case.
Now whether or not the breeding is worth doing would depend on what you are expecting or hoping to get.

keith, great post kinda on the same topic "brood bitches" ,not going to take this into any line of dogs just in general . is it exceptable to brood an below average female from an proved litter and with 3-4 generations of proof as well. especially if you line breed back into it . you should end up with the average of the blood line. if you have the room and money I think that's a do able option , will work the best for guys that are heavy into papers

sorry rick don't look like keith or I gave you any real advice there just more questions

Re: Some Opinions First Time
I would outcross to a proven trial dog that you like if your going to trial the pups! People can say what they want about these scientific breedings but more than likely they'll turn out real close to their parents! Thats just what I've learned through my own breedings.

Jim, it depends on the options you have available to you. All things being equal (which they almost never are by the way) breeding a good dog from a proven family or lineage (in your eyes) is the preferred option.jim matuszewski wrote:keith, great post kinda on the same topic "brood bitches" ,not going to take this into any line of dogs just in general . is it exceptable to brood an below average female from an proved litter and with 3-4 generations of proof as well. especially if you line breed back into it . you should end up with the average of the blood line. if you have the room and money I think that's a do able option , will work the best for guys that are heavy into papers
However, if the ONLY option is a subpar individual from a lineage that possesses all the traits, characteristics and type you're looking for....that's certainly better than a good individual from subpar lineage.
Just keep in mind that ANY time you make a concession you're throwing characteristics and traits/type back into your gene pool that may not be desireable. Somewhere down the road this could come back to haunt you as it will contribute to dragging the average of the lineage down.
Re: Some Opinions First Time
Breed for the hunt not the trial . But if you are going to breed for the trials at western, grand lake, praire creek etc your going to have to run and breed their bloodline if you want to make it to winners pack cause hare hound blood won't get there at these clubs
Re: Some Opinions First Time
Now this is just me.
But if you love the dogs. find a format they fit in and enjoy what you have.
like UKC PP.
you can try your cross , it works sometimes.
but hey if it don't . its not like it has not happen before.
To me it just seems like when a guy has a dog he likes and he starts breeding it to fit in a particular format it don't end up like he wants.
a person may be better off getting a line of dogs known for reproducing dogs that excel in that format, if that's the kind of dogs you want.
it would save him a lot of time ,money and aggravation.
just my humble 2 cents.
Steve
PS. good post's Northwester i enjoyed them.
