Post by rabbitearl »

How long dose it takes to run one stiff? I ve never done it. Catch some in the bed.But never ran one stiff. Had a man one time to run one mor and he stiff up two and ran both around 30 min.(First Cold Frosted Mor and I was there) He said the first cold weather dose a lot of this were the rabbit is not used to it. I don t know.I say Good Dogs. But anyway yall that dose this. How long dose it takes to stiff one up?

Another thing. Is it in the rabbit too. I mean I seen some guys that after two hr of good running you better be pulling the dogs off.Rabbit is getting stiff he is started to sit and dogs are looking at him when he getting up.Then some say 1 hr. I don t know. Thanks

I've only ever witnessed one run stiff. wet fall day/ pack of 5 dogs that complimented each other perfectly/ 50 minutes of running with only 5 checks of over 15 seconds.

I always thought it was bullshit until last spring. My 2 males ran one for over a hour straight and i noticed the dogs were getting closer to the rabbit and the rabbit was circling smaller and smaller until they shut up and my male retreived the rabbit in his mouth and the rabbit was completly stiff!! I was so proud. lol
Its was warm. In the 60s
Very minimal breakdowns and when there was a check it was for seconds.
It really takes a good couple dogs to run one stiff!

My observations on seeing perhaps a couple dozen or so ran " stiff" . 1) Weather makes no difference.2) Have never saw anything but a full grown rabbit ran stiff. 3) Have never saw a female rabbit run stiff. 4) Anywhere from about 20 minutes on, can do it, good steady pressure) For the guys who have never done it, I bet that most of you have, you just never realized it as the dogs didn't bring him back to you !! And oh, yes, I have never heard one that stiffened up squeal when it was caught, unlike at other times!

I've only ever had my dogs do it once. It only took a couple of circles. My female brought it back to me, stiff as a board. I thought they had lost it. When I grabbed it I thought they just found a dead one, but then felt the guts and it was warm. It was a good run, but they've had good runs like that before. I feel it had something to do with that particular rabbit but that's purely a guess.

Pete Tuck and I had one older dog and three younger dogs run one stiff on a twenty minute run one summer afternoon a couple of years ago. There were no checks longer than 15 seconds and the dogs running were not speed demons. He was as stiff as a pointer. Last Saturday we had a catch after less than 10 minutes of not so good frozen turf running. Rabbit just squatted and got picked up. No shots had been fired.

I don't think it matters on the time of year. We catch a lot of rabbits in the spring an summer, but I've seen abunch run stiff some times only a half hour others much more but every time I've seen it the dogs were locked on an absolutely relentless.

A few years back we had a pack of Grand Champions in PP that ran 4 stiff that season at my club!
I told them we'd run out of rabbits to run. lol
A cast is only 60 min. I 'd say the rabbits were stiff in 40 min?

Grands are generally older, but they make up for it in accuracy.
This pack could smoke a bunny and like Bredemier said "lock on".

A dog running solo generally will take longer to run one ridged.
60+ min.

I'm gonna guess that it happens more timer than not in the spring/summer since buck rabbits are most likely running out of their home zones. I've never ran one stiff in the winter, since most like to go into holes. Rabbits seen to run longer in the spring/summer since the weeds and briars are thicker, seem to me they feel more comfortable. Plus spring is ideal running.

Depends how fast and how many checks...if it's check free non stop pounding with dogs that are 8+ on speed prob as little as 20 mins you can do it. Most I have heard about seem to be around an hr though.

Can't remember how long the dogs ran it but it was around a hour or so with solid running, it was several years ago and my cousin and I were standing on top of a hill watching dogs pound through thickets and tall weeds and in wheat field that was about as tall as the dogs, they got in wheat field and we could see the wheat moving where the dogs were and were the rabbit was, it kept circling smaller and smaller, we slipped down where they were running and by the time we got to them they had almost run this rabbit stiff, they were very close, I walked up to where I seen the wheat moving up ahead of dogs and saw the rabbit and reached down and grabbed it, we took it back to the truck and put it in the dog box, and put the dogs in the other side, we took the rabbit back home and set him loose in an open field behind my cousins house about 150 yards from a nice big briar patch, we got young pups that wasn't started yet and let them sight chase it to the briars, rabbit got away luckily and it was quite a day and experience, only person who could verify this story was my cousin but he tragically was killed on the job in 2007. It is a great memory of that day though with him and the dogs!!

I always figured it was a rabbit that had a problem. Our dogs are anything but fast and we have had it happen several times. I know there are times when we put steady pressure on them and it has happened. It is pretty common for us to have 2 and 3 hour runs on a rabbit with very hot conditions and it never seems to bother the rabbits. We have also had them stiffen up in cold winter months so I have always just assumed it was a rabbit that was not real healthy. We just don't run rabbit that put that kind of pressure on dogs.
Here is a example of a steady 2 hour run.

If you have some fast hard driving dog it will not take as long as if the pack you our running is slower. Most rabbits get a chance to stop and rest but when you have a pack that is not loosing the track and on that rabbits ass he will lock up withing 30 min. I have had my dogs in the past do it quite a bit. When I have found a rabbit to do it the most is when they run a long fence row over some flat ground and the dog our running hard. When it happens to you , you will think the dogs our bringing you one back that has been dead for awhile. There is a different in the dogs catching one and running one until it becomes completely stiff. Wish I still had those type of dogs. Also would like to know does this happen to hares to. I think it would but never have hunted them.
