Find another vet! I had a bitch who's birth canal was too small. The animal hospital wanted a minimum of $1000 for the c-section not including any thing else. I took her to a vet that is a Beagler (3 hour ride) and had it done for $150.

hardtime, I am so sorry to hear about this, it can just break your heart when something like this happens. It does make it a poor way to start off the new year.

Sorry to hear your loss, We all can try to say what we would have done if this was one of our hounds, however until it happens you never know. Some vets are plain too expensive. I would look for a vet that handles livestock, they are more understanding and relize we beaglers are good folk not millionairs. You may also check some colleges in the area for example A&M's most of the time have vets on sight with a team of student doctors. They can sometimes be expensive but somettimes you can get lucky and they will do the surgury for the experence. I personaly love my dogs but I could not afford a vet bill of that size.

It was not my Snowman dog, but my Spook hound out of John Mclins field champion foxhound bitch Black Creek Bertha. The Snowman dog is doing well.

I appreciate all of the kind words from you folks. I did find during the weekend a vet in South Carolina, where I deer hunt that according to his assistant that lives next door, that he would have done the surgery for about 500.00. She said that Dr. Coker removed a golf ball from a Lab for 300.00, and two months later had to remove another one. Imagine that.
Alabama John, I agree with you about the 22, not squimish about that, but I was at work when the vet called and hated for the wife to go get the dog and then have it suffer until I could get home to do that unpleasent task.
Lessons learned in life. Hope you all have a good hunting season, as I am wrapping up, as I only hunt deer with my beagles.... Mark

I`ve been going to Dr. Coker for years. He is fine vet that I would recommend to anyone. Also he enjoys hunting,therefore he can`t be all that bad. And his prices are very resonable compared to other vets I have gone to. I`m sorry to here the bad news about Spook.
I know you don`t rabbit hunt but if you would like to come and here the dogs run you welcome any time.

I had this same thing happen here in MI. I had a female that slipped a disc in her back. Took her to three vets and no one could figure out what was wrong with her. they referred me to a Vet at MSU that finally pinpointed what was wrong. He said he is always looking for a good beagle and lives on a huge farm. He said he would due the 2500 surgery and keep the hound if it was alright. Knowing I didnt have that type of money to spend on a hound, I said ok. After surgery he let me come in when she was up in around and say my good byes. He took her home and about a year and a half later I got a phone call. It was the vet and he said if you would like to get your beagle back no charge come pick her up. I can't seem to keep her in her kennel and she is killing all my chickens off! I laughed jumped in my car and drove down to pickup an old friend.

I guess you are lucky, but here in Fla we are being run over by PETA types, and I am quite sure that I would never have seen this hound again. I have hated losing him, but I guess I would rather have him humanly destroyed than see such a good running hound sitting inside someones fenced in yard looking out, wanting to hunt...Mark

The prices sound steep, but you're talking about major, major exploratory surgery and a tough recovery with lots of potential complications. Based on the infection, you already started having some. Nothing is probably going to get a towel through the intestines, for starters. Secondly, since the towel has been lodged there, the intestines are "swallowing themselves up." The intestines push against the towel to try and push it through, but because of the resistance, the intestines instead push themselves forward on top of other intestines. It's a twisted and stretched mess in places and not easy to work with. The vet would need to search the intestines pretty thoroughly for any materials left behind to make sure the situation doesn't re-appear and that there are no tears anywhere.

Vets always say, "I would've only charged you $X," but then when you come calling the next time, that's not what happens. Bait-and-switch.

Years ago had a bitch that had a litter of puppies. Ignorant as I was I threw an old field jacket in the box for her and the puppies. A few days later she came down with what I thought was Parvo. She was passing lots of RED blood. Took her to the vet. He looked her over well and said she had TRASH TOXCEMIA. She had ate part of the old field jacket and it had tore her guts up. She lived and that was the last time I ever put anything in a whelping box.

I have nothing that you would be intrested in a the present time. The last time I had one of my hounds to open on a deer was february of last year, and he was delt with serverly by tri-tronics. Sence then he has literally turn down at least a hundred. As you know Flirt should have pups this spring with two males going to you and the rest spoken for. Give me a call a couple of weeks before you come. It looks like I might be having some guided hunts at Hesterville Plantation towards the end of the month. Looking foward to seeing you.
