I lived in Saskatchewan for about 12 years and had beagles while there. I ran in the farm country where it was very open and the wolves hardly ever ventured out of the big woods and if they did bam it was a dead wolf. Things are different up there and different rules apply. Norwester has had a wolf encounter and lost a dog so has Budd but it is fairly rare. All this stuff about putting the fear in wolves is b.s. as they don't think like humans. Problem wolves need to be dealt with for sure but they don't sit around thinking "darn I will never do that again" when they see their pack mates shot because they killed a dog. Once a wolf becomes a dog killer it will continue until taken out. The guys out east in Canada have more trouble with coyotes than wolves. What usually happens is dogs get near a den site or a rondevou area and wolves are very territorial at those places and then they kill a dog and then they will start killing dogs just because they can and they wont tolerate other canines in their home areas be it dogs other wolves or coyotes. They don't have supermarkets like us so they defend those core areas fiercely.

Re: what do the guys in canada do about wolves
There's two ways to do it..... hunt them over bait (usually on a frozen lake or pond). Satisfying but not really efficient. The other and really the only way to do it, is by hanging wire (snares) and you better have someone who knows what they are doing. Wolves are really smart and if you do a half ass job you'll teach all the others what to avoid.
The woods are big and wolves have an enormous territory. If one or a bunch come thru you may not see sign of them again for 2 or 3 weeks.
Basically if they move into an area.....you get someone to hang wire and you won't be running there for a long time.

I don't go out and run in the wild as much as I wanted to. when I go out, I run one of my dog with bell. I also put on a running shoes to keep up with the dogs and shoot a 22 rifle every 30 minutes. I have not had a wolf/coyote attack in the last 4 years.

Here in Eastern Ontario, in most wmu's (wildlife management units) coyotes and wolves season hunting is open year long on a small game license. We have both. While Timber wolves (smaller specie than Northern wolves) can be found in large remote track of timbers, coyotes is very present in agricultural zones. In buffer zones, there is also the possibility to find hybrids.
I only know of one guy having lost a dog to coyotes when the dog got to close to their den.
It should also be said that in my area during the winter months many run dogs on coyotes and no doubt this helps.
A couple months ago, I spoke with Branko after buying a female dog from him. He was telling that during the winter months he run some beagles wearing bells on coyotes. he claims that comes spring when he starts running on rabbits he can see coyotes moving out away from the sounds of the bells. Not sure if he has wolves in his part of Manitoba as he did not mentioned them.

Re: what do the guys in canada do about wolves
There has been a lot of research going on to test that theory. In the early days of the republic, they offered 100 bucks for any confirmed attack by a wolf on a person and it was never collected. The two main theories are that it is possible to train wolves to be afraid of domestic animals and 2. most of the wolves that do attack people and dogs have been inbred with domestic dogs somewhere...Dna is proving it. Maybe they need to exterminate everything but the pure wolves. But most animals can be trained to avoid just about anythings under the right circumstances.dingo wrote:Chappy

I vote we use your dogs to train the wolves not to kill domestic animals! That way we can see if it is theory or real life. I am just guessing but your moniker makes me think you are from Mo. and the number of wolves is just about nil down there so why do you know so much with no animals around you? Too much Disney!

Ya, because living in one state totally and completely means you are not allowed to research or watch shows about the problem. Matter of fact, you can't even go to college and learn things in America either...dingo wrote:Mo.beagler5000

I can talk to you about 3rd world poverty till you want to puke but I haven't been there. I find it intersting that instead of coming back with a reasonable response or having normal conversation you use an emoticon of someone showing his ass. Guess it fits you in real life too. Carry on.

I put the smiley on there towards Disney not you. Disney hardly ever produces anything that is real.
The wolf lovers are not living where we do and do not understand what it is like to have dog killed or maimed by wolves.
If you was offended that was not my intent.
I killed nearly a hundred wolves while I lived in northern Saskatchewan. I do think I am qualified to talk wolves and their behaviors. There is a huge difference between theory and practice. Dogs and wolves will not interbreed unless man is involved. Dogs have wolf DNA in them because they are descendants of wolves. You came across as taking a cheap shot at me which I did not care for. You are entitled to your opinions but please do not come across as being an expert on wolves because you are not. Watching a TV program does not qualify you as being a knowledgeable wolf authority. Spending time hunting them like I did does give me the edge over you.
Just because it was on TV or a newspaper does not always mean it is correct.
Did you know a woman in Mo. shot a collared wolf with her bow that was from Michigan?
