another dog food thread.

Post by Joeyman »

sorry i know we always have alot of dog food threads on here.

I'm a supporter of BlackGold Black Bag dog food but i just can't afford to buy it anymore. I have 7 beagles and its taking a beating on my wallet. The prices for Black Gold keep going up. My dogs do really well on it. I been feeding it for a long time now.

I need to find a feed that doesnt break the bank. So far all I can come up with is Diamond Feed. Its affordable but when I walk the isles at the farm store they have 4 different kinds and I dont know which to purchase so I bite the bullet and buy Blackgold. I have to buy dog food next week so I"m wanting to try something different thats affordable.

suggestions?

I fed Ultra Advantage 26-18 for many years until my distributer quit dealing in dog food. I switched over to Hubbard High Energy (a 26-18 dog food). The guys I Bear hunt with have fed Hubbard for years with good results. I have fed it for almost 6 months now and my dogs are doing great on it. I buy it by the pallet to get the better pricing and buy my supply for the year at once. I store it in sealed barrels and the feed keeps forever in those barrels. My buddy uses sealed barrels for Bear bait and the bait keeps for years. The price on Hubbard was $26 a bag pallet price before the price hikes last summer.

I feed diamond hi energy right now and in the summer months I cut it in half with the red bag. So far so good. I am just curious to why some people don't like diamond? I have heard that a lot and don't really know why?

I have a friend who keeps a pack of 12 beagles that are fed notlhing but "Old Yeller" from Kroger's. His pack is run in heavy cover at least five days per week and look good all the time, he states that it takes a month for hounds to adjust to it and then their energy levels and stools are excellent. I run with him and his hounds get the job done, have never had the patience to use it for a month myself as I get loose stools and a weight drop.

I have fed alot of different feed over the years and I always come back to Purina Dog Chow in the end.
Right now I'm trying Retriever blue bag for my male dogs. It seems to be doing very well.
If you can find it consistently the Hi Standard is the best I've ever seen.
Just remember that digestability is more important than anything. If your dogs can't get the nutrients out of the feed
it doesn't matter whats in the feed.
