Somebody/Anybody

Post by bucks better beagles »

I know there are a few guys on here that run fox/coyote with oversize beagles. I am looking for a young male or two to train before the snow goes. Any tips would be appreciated. I am in Michigan and need them to be fairly close due to unable to travel far. Prefer Patch or other open colored dogs. Also would prefer but not necessary, some that have a pre-disposition (grit and want to) to run this type of game.

Just head me in the right direction.

I would think you would have an issue running yotes with just one or two big beagles. When that 50lb yote turns and wants to fight it could be big trouble.

I thought about crossing my yote hound with a beagle, but didn't for just that reason. You would be fine running fox tho. If you would be interested in looking for a bigger hound, I could point you in the right direction.

Mike: I have had no trouble running coyote with beagles. I have never had one to get hurt. They seem to just run them quite similar to a fox here in these big swamps. I just stay quiet and try to get close to them.

I would definitely be interested in coyote dogs but it would have to be of the small variety. Years ago, I had some that were only about 17 inches tall and they were great.

Thanks Littlewoody. That is what I am talking about exactly. I don't think Reddog let many of his dogs go though. I have found a fox beagle web site but there doesn't seem to be many of them in Michigan. Looks like these patch hounds are my best bet.

Thanks

There are many factors that come into play (more than in beagles) when it comes to a complete coyote hound. One of the areas I think a beagle would struggle with is killing a coyote. I've seen plenty of big hounds leave a chase when challanged alone. My yote hound will kill or at least bay a coyote when challanged (in a pack or alone).

I'm no expert, just speaking from experience.

If your happy running beagles on yotes, thats all that matters. And, if they can bay/ kill alone..... I want one!

Sorry din't mean to hi-jack your post.... Mike

Buck check him out. chuck norris as far as I know does not have yote hounds just hunts Elvis and Ozzie. I`ve been told these two Hounds will run a yote down, run into him and kill it or bay it till Tom or some one gets there and kills it.

Buck, Chuck is right, I no longer have hounds that run coyote. When my littermate to Elvis and Ozzie died I focused my attention to just my rabbit dogs. I do still hunt with Tom and the boys on occasion but not as much as I used to. I don't feel that it"s right to leave my rabbit dogs sit in the kennel while I run coyote everyday.

mjohnson, The Patch Hounds that we use are more than enough to handle a coyote. They have grit and stamina like no other. We used to use running walkers before we switched to beagles. Our problem with the big hounds was most of them would not bay or fight. The Patch hounds do

You can believe it or it, It matters not to me. When I hunted coyote with the guys we would average 30 to 40 kills a year and thats just from January 2nd until March 1st. I'm sure those numbers are still the same.
