Who can run it better?

Post by rabbitearl »

In the early 90s i read this in the rabbit hunter magz were Rev Parks explain, and never look at it until then, but over the years of looking at beagles and judgeing them I would agree. So I ask you. What dog can run a rabbit better.Chop month dog or long brawl bark?

I think most of the time chop mouth dogs are faster....a bawl mouth dog usually picks their head way up at each bark. Myself I like the big ol' boomy bawl mouths and I'd give up speed for it. It's nice to have a deep bawl when there's a lot of snow on the trees the voice carries much better than the squealy high pitch howls.

Not sure about rabbits but I know deer will run from squealing or chop mouth dogs faster than bawling mouths.

A dogs mouth has nothing to do with how a dog runs. Chop mouth dogs just sound faster because they are a little more exciting to listen to. Jmo

No difference as long as ability is the same. I have found that an "overbarking" chop mouth dog will hold a bawl mouth back because the bawler has to check on him all the time.

i For one would like to know what revern parks had to say , and what you have observed Earl.
my uncle has told me a chop mouth dog will hold the track better and can be fast just as Dixiedog says.
they dont have to lift thier head up to bark.
so please share Earl.
thanks in advance.

I to am a Luver of BAWL mouth dogs. Being that I am getting "Up in age" AKA OLD  it is hard for me to tell some chop mouth dogs I have 7 dogs that I run One Bawl mouth one Squell mouth( Sounds like she was hit with a e-collar) and a Gravel mouth (sounds like she has the Collar to tight) and the rest are Chop and two of them sound so close that I can Not tell them apart. Some Bawl mouth dawgs do raise their heads but I had one that would keep his nose on the ground and could turn on a dime. :check:

I would have to disagree with this analogy. If a dog lacks confidence or ability it has to check back irregardless of mouth. The dog that has IT aint checking back on any other dog. Give me the chop or the squall. I really don't care if they bawl, but don't throw back your head. Ran with a killer clean squall mouth dog Saturday that aint checking back with any dog if he has the line. He can flat drive a rabbit.

You are right Anthony. I think I did not express my thought clearly. I love a bawl mouth hound that can shorten it up and get on about the game.

Owl,I do remember and its been along time ago and not 100 percent it was Rev Parks but I could not look at the maz fast enuff back then to read his stuff on rabbit dogs.learn alot and learn about the chop mouth dog.A chop mouth dog would smell between bark giving it more line control than the long bawl mouth dog.The long bawl weather he pick his head up or not could not be smelling when he was barking but most of the dogs that I ve seen would pick there head up.Long as the rabbit was not cutting to much the bawl mouth was alright. He didnot say if ever bawl mouth was like this but over the years at looking at all these different dogs run.The chop mouth dog hands down can run it better. This is what I ve seen.I love a long bawl mouth dog too.but I ve have to go with what I see.I ve seen the rabbit coming and make a cut and the dogs get there with that long bawl and run over 10 to 15 yards before they put there nose back on the ground and then another 10 yards before they relize weres the line. And I am not saying every dog is like this. This is just what I ve seen. But as far as making it faster.I don t know.the chop mouth dog may run the rabbit faster cause he spend more time on the line.

Many of the bawl mouth dogs I have owned and run with shorten up their bark when the chase gets really moving. I really don't think the style, bawl, squall, squeal, or chop has anything to do with speed.

I prefer a bawl mouth for the loudness of of it but I think I have to agree they have a better chance of losing contact with the scent if they are always picking up their head to sound off. I have heard this same explanation from another guy in the past and it makes sense to me. There are of course always exceptions but just the mechanics of it makes sense.
