Thanks for the kind words, guys. If I may defend the pens, the pens exist because the clubs own that ground (or a member sometimes loans theirs). But mostly the AKC clubs are very, very old, and they bought ground - as much as they could, because they didn't want to be told later they couldn't hold a trial on such and such land. They realize their dogs won't be tested on deer like being run in the wild, but they won't be in the road, people won't run them off the grounds -- it's a good trade off. Of course they have property taxes and maintenance to deal with ... work parties and all that. :)

Bev to no disrespect but most pens I have ran in are loaded with local deer, deer which live in the pen.. Last year in a Midwest trial I witnessed deer standing in a corner while the dogs bayed them.. Does will have their fawns in these pens and be reluctant to leave even if getting ran. Though I agree clubs have a huge expence of upkeep taxes feeding rabbits, maintaince on fence. Their are quite a few pens here in Michigan and currently in the UP the wolves have not killed inside an enclosure. So not only do you not have to worry about
roads one can have the peace of mind that their dogs are safe from all different dangers. Another benefit is the hunts can get through a large number of hounds without loss of time or expence of driving. Biggest down fall is being the last cast after a 40 acres pen has been ran for 4 straight days game is scarce in some cases, because you are working the same grounds to death. Plus dogs are coming into a pen that after a few series that have lines everwhere. There are good and bad and I like them both the outside and the inside. When I take my kids it is easier to keep and eye on them inside a pen lol

A lot of the same dogs genetically are running in both formats and winning there are some differences that change how well they score from one to another but a solid well rounded hound can and does win in both. There are exceptions don't get me wrong but if you got a hard hunting dog that will go find you a rabbit and drive the front of a pack and turn you can pretty much win in any format.

Lots of dogs out there that want the front, but finding a rabbit and being able to turn with the track is a different story...

I've ran almost all the formats, UGBF is one that I haven't. I've ran with some of the best dogs and handlers or owners, what I've seen you have to know your dogs and what format that they will fit in. There is good and bad in all, but the one thing that I have learned is sportsmanship, friends and good times. Sometimes these words comes to mind, The Agony Of Defeat, but it's not the end of the world or the time to start bashing, it's time to regroup and try again. Enough Said.
