Biospot

Post by Duke »

I replied to a thread on another forum about Biospot, but I thought since so many beaglers are using this product because of its cost I would give them some things to think about.

I had two of my dogs go into seizures after using Biospot. Biospot works through the bloodstream. It can be very toxic to some dogs. I have only had experience with the seizures. The product does work, however kill ticks and fleas die only after they bite your dogs. There is a whole website dedicated to the problems some folks have had with Biospot. It is as follows:

http://www.elversonpuzzle.com/biospot.html

Check it out and decide if the low cost of Biospot is worth the problems you may have. Some folks have dogs that can tolerate it their whole life, others have problems with one application. Sometimes you get what you pay for. Good luck with whatever produsts you use, but take the time to find out about them before you use them. We owe it to the dogs we love.

Duke, thank you for the information. While I have never used biospot, I did purchase Hartz one drop from Wal-Mart. I made sure of the dosage (by weight) and used it on my two year old female. She became VIOLENTLY ill...hid for days...hair fell out...wouldn't eat. I took her to the vet as soon as I realized she was sick and he wasn't the least bit surprised. My vet told me he has seen dogs and cats die from these treatments. :yikes: I'm not going to tell you fellow beaglers not to use these products. However, it might be a good idea to try a very low dosage for the first time to check out their reaction. My vet had to give my female two antihistamine shots and it still took around a month for her to return to normal. I still feel like I almost lost her. Now, I use seven dust and there have been no more reactions. Duke, I hope your dogs are OK now.

P.S. My vet said the Hartz company knows about the problems, but it is a big money product for them, so they won't pull it. I realize the potential exists for a reaction with any company's product, so folks be careful with your hunting buddies. Brian

crewchf, I certainly am no expert, so all I can tell you is that I've personally never experienced a problem with the shampoos. If you really want to know, I would suggest you call a vet. The advice would be free and you would have peace of mind. Have a good day! :D Brian

bio spot

Post by Big Dog »

I have had two dogs have allergic reactions to biospot. One became lethargic and acted like she was drunk, just my luck it happened on a weekend so I took her to the emergency clinic. It ended up costing me almost $500 and basicaly all they did was give her an IV and let the stuff run it's course. I can't speak for others but I will never use it on anything in my kennel again. Same goes for hartz. I have used the frontline spray with good success.

I wasn't gonna say anything at first, but now I'll share. I thought maybe I just had a hardy brand of fleas in my kennel this summer or something. We never have fleas around here, we've been lucky that way, but then we've always used Frontline, too. This summer I've been busy and too lazy to go to the vet for the Frontline, so I had Ralph to pick up some Biospot from the feed store - heaven knows it's as expensive as Frontline, I figured it would work. Nah, 3 days later the dogs are still loaded with fleas. The stuff is junk in my opinion. Thankfully we didn't have any dogs come down sick or anything.

We had to wait 2 weeks before we could go get and apply Frontline again. During the wait, we did sprinkle a little sevin dust in the boxes and around - not a lot, but it made a huge difference. I think we will continue to use the sevin dust along with the Frontline because the sevin dust cuts down on a big number of fleas and ticks around the kennel and on the dogs all on its own.

Bev,
I have used Sevins it seems very effective and I have not heard of any side effects. Has anyone had good results also, or has anyone found any downsides to sevins.

The only real cure for fleas is suspend.

Spray the yard with this stuff.

http://www.pestproducts.com/fleas.htm

Then keep your dogs dipped regularly.

The fleas will be gone.

bio spot and a hartz pill

Post by asti »

This summer was the first we got the flea invasion, after killing off all the barn rats.
As a preventive, normally I use permectrin II its a concentrate, can use as dip or dilute for spray on, but since its getting close to freezing at night now, didnt want to soak the dogs. I purchased some Bio Spot yesterday
and want to THANK YOU for these posts and reading link! I will be returning the Bio-Spot today!

On the Hartz pill, about 3 years ago I tried the flea pill on my dogs. I loss a beautiful young bitch to seizures, I never attributed it to the hartz pill, but after reading this, bet it was. I HAD mentioned it to the vet in response to the "anything new or something she could have gotten into?" But he said nothing about it.

i"ve used bio spot for about four years now my running buddies told me about it i run my dogs seven days a week all through the summer and the stuff we run in is so think the dogs pick up so many tickes it is pitiful biospot is the only thing i have found that works with any success ive tried hartz from wall mart i usually use a heavier dosage 40 to 50 pounds and none of my dogs have shown any side effects. i also started using the biospot sray this past summer srayed it on the kennels, bedding, all around to help prevent any fleas. I start using it on pups at six months old in a smaller dose and still there hasent been any problems i now people that dip there dogs and even used seven dust as a preventative in my own kennels i live in the hills of ky so ive heard a lot of the old time remedies there is only a few id even consider using.

I've used it for years on all my dogs [15+ head] no problems and fleas are a thing of the past. Its not as effective for heavy tick pressure I still dust with Sevin when ticks are bad. I guess I'm just lucky thanks for the info.

I've used Biospot for about 3 years ( lots cheaper then Front line). However I've had one dog that had a reaction to it and at the time didn't know what had happened. I still use it and have had no more problems. I only used it twice this season and it was for ticks at the beginning of the season and for mosquitoes this fall. It sure worked on them.

But I've heard some bad things about it.

FrontLine is the best I've ever used.

I used biospot once last month without any visible signs of problems. But there's another brand called "Freedom" I think, that was much much cheaper locally. It supposedly works the same as biospot (and had just as good feedback to it), so I got it. It works well. But has anyone heard of any negative side-effects with freedom?
