Fun in the sun... NOT REALLY!

Post by rabbitrookie »

Well the 100 degree highs finally let up today in indiana so I let my 2 yr old male out t9o run a rabbit. And he was on a rabbit within 5 min or so. He ran it pretty hard for about 20 min before it found refuge in a old rock pile. After calling my dog off his mini mountain on which his proudly stood bawling like a crazed dog we headed up a access road that ran along side a bean field. He got on another rabbit which took him for a quick loop thru a briar patch. Then the rabbit burst out onto the access road with my dog in tow. Would have been a dead rabbit if season was in! They both made a mad dash uphill to my backyard right past the dog kennel. And when I made up the hill there was my dog laying outside the kennel staring intently at his water bowl inside the chainlink fence. I took it as a sign my dog was DOG TIRED. I took it as a lesson. The heat can take its toll on a dog even when they have spent everyday of a heatwave in a shaded kennel with a kiddie pool. Us people pace ourselves to deal with heat. Beagles dont! They go full tilt till they simply run out of gas. I won't run him again for at least a week. Let him rest and recover during the cooler weather this week. It's amazing how quick a dog can over heat. He went from good to bad in 5 minutes time. Everbody be careful and please pray for rain! Thanks.
