hey buck, why is it not?i will not keep a dog that im not happy to own.as many of the guys on here talk of all the culling they do,that fat piggy beagle you speak of that wouldnt run a rabbit out of the kitchen should have been long gone before it ever got fat.if you dont mind feeding that type of dog im sure your pm box will be full of people who have a few to give you.and by the way,i am not stupid i know what you guys are talking about, but if your not happy to feed or own then why would you ever call it a good dog! :-o
I cannot stand a hound, who over runs the line and keeps opening up. Shows me he/she has a lack of brains. I love a hound who can turn with the rabbit, make it look easy. I also like to see a hound shut up in the check or when the hound over runs the line, he shuts up. Also I can't stand a dog that cant pull a check but will steal the front and can't hold it, creating unnecessary checks!!!

1 more thing. A good dog should be able to JUMP and RUN its own rabbit SOLO.

... This brings me to a question.- Some people keep alot of dogs. I find it difficult to keep 4. Are they settling? This is a hard question to answer. We have different ideas of what some qualitys are. For example we all like fast dogs. But fast to some means blazing foot speed. To me it means fastest to circle the rabbit (or most efficient). I have run with dogs that people say have big nose and found out that they dont.
I have now in my kennel a truly great bitch. Every dog that comes in is measured against her. So far none have stayed. Friends say I judge to harshly. I feel that I wont have better dogs if i keep worse. Maybe I am doomed to failure.
I do have a young bitch now that is promising... This brings me to a question.- Some people keep alot of dogs. I find it difficult to keep 4. Are they settling?

YEP! If you truly are trying to keep top notch hounds you will never have a pen full. I feel your pain, I don't want to settle it is very difficult to raise or find those truly special hounds!!! But keep on trying don't settle when you do find the one to measure up to the female it will be worth it :)

Hcap, What Buck is saying is that someone keeping a hound has no bearing on its quality. What you are saying is basicly if it's not a good one you are not going to be feeding it. But some do and Buck deals with alot of different people. I have seen guys get a pup and keep it till it was three to see what it wil make.I 've seen them die of old age at some peoples kennels that wouldn't have made it thru one hunt with old Buck. I know what ya meant but also know what Buck is saying.

sometimes they can be a pretty good hound to some and not others....I gave my father in law a young dog once he later sold the dog for 800 dollars... again i say one mans trash is another mans treasure.....I've had guys show me dogs that they are so proud of before.. and after i got done watching them i was ready to take a long walk off a short cliff...I REFUSE to settle.. I dont have that perfect dog right now... but I will keep looking... the quest for the super dog is half the fun to me....i would rather play checkers than take a dog to the woods that dont have a competitive nature..one that aint gonna be fighting for the front or a foot warmer.... some guys are satisfied with a hound that can jump its own rabbit and circle it..I AM NOT..

I know you are an outstanding stand and jump man. Seems to me you lost to a man twice your age, who was high on alcohol, and feebled by arthritis.
