not taking it as a negative at all , i honestly dont know how to answer either question but ill give it an honest try , first off i am way past the have to kill something stage , that being said , any hunt is a good hunt to me , if im able to get outside , breath some fresh country air , get some good exercise , spend some quality time with good friends and family or enjoy peace and quiet by myself , watch and listen to dogs that try as hard as they can to please me , watch wildlife , even if its not what im after , i enjoy it all , some of my most memorable hunts were ones that i didnt even carry a gun and nothing was harvested , some of them were hunts that we killed everything that was ran , wether that was 1 or 10 . i have great hunts where we never jumped a rabbit , never got a wimper out of the dogs .in all my years i can only remember a couple that i would call bad hunts , one was when we lost a young dog of a buddies , that dog was gone for 43 days and turned wild enough we had to catch him in a live trap , another was when one of mine was bit by a copperhead ! most days my dogs do a great job , there has been days that i scratch my head and wonder what the heck they were thinking but i dont let that ruin my day in the field , theres more to it than that . as for how i determain what dog to keep and what dog to move , i cant honestly answer that one , i sold a reg. female one time for $100 that would run the crap out of a rabbit , good line control , great nose , honest mouth , wouldnt look twice at anything but a rabbit , handled great , great kennel manners and a good looking big full 15 inch dog just because i didnt like her , and still to this day i cant tell you for sure what i didnt like about her , just didnt ! if i like them they stay , if i dont they go , the best dog i ever owned i sold for $100 at 3 because he didnt like to run with more than 2 dogs , i only had 2 other dogs but i run with a buddy alot so he was gone and this dog done everything right , as close to great as i have ever had . i know what style dog i like , sending a 10 month old male back to my buddy who breed him this weekend that is doing a fine job really like the way he does things , i believe he is going to be a really good dog , because he is a mess in the kennel , walks in his crap and strings it all over the kennel , have to hose his out everyday and im tired of it so he is gone ! no set standard for me , when i like them they stay , when i dont they go ! sometimes i can even tell you what i dont like about them ! sometimes i cant !See low wrote:and by the way Dog please dont take this negative ,, because that is not the intent but,,, how do you determane when youve had a good hunnt or a bad one,, and how do you determane wich dogs to keep or sale ,,,, you have to have some kind of idea of what your dog has to measure up to??????.......
augerhead , i dont want you to take anything i say personal because its not , i am only stating facts , i went back and read this entire topic and a can still only read it one way , for you to say "maybe those statements that are WAY OFF are just because of the sample size of dogs you have owned " is just a round about way of saying you are wrong ! i have read it a hundred times and it is what it is ! just because someone didnt say it in those exact words dont mean that wasnt what was implied , its just a simple twist of words that allows one to back pedal ! like i said , dont take it personal because i sure dont , in a way i am kinda in the same boat as you , i cant understand for the life of me why someone would go through countless dogs , some good , trying to find that perfect one that probably dont even exsist and pass up quality time enjoying something they like to do while looking for it ! but just because i dont understand it doesnt mean its wrong . if thats what they want to do and they give it their all and do it honestly then i wish them the best of luck , even if i dont know them from Adam!augerhead wrote: Not trying to degrade anyones opinion or preference, I'm just saying some of the issues we debate on here seem crazy, statements are made that don't make sence to me at all. Maybe those statements that are way off are just because of the sample size of dogs you have owned.
