Trapping Coyotes

I have recently come in to possession of a few steel traps that my uncle use to trap with. I would like to try to thin out the coyotes around my running grounds by trapping a few but have been told they are hard to catch. Anybody with any experience at this, any helpful info. on how to set up would be appreciated. Also, he gave me a big metal box trap that is big enough to hold a big dog. Would the coyote go into this contraption or not. Anybody every caught one in a box trap? Most folks in my neck of the woods say they are too smart to catch except in a snare but since I dont have any snares, Im gonna try with what I do have. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Easiest set for a coyote is the dirt hole. I use muskrat or any small amount of meat down the hole with some lightly scented coyote lure on the back of the hole. Spray a little urine of to the back and to the side. Most important thing to remember is bedding the trap. Make sure it does not move any where but on the trigger.

I should have mentioned that you trap fox the same way as coyote except you can move your trap back about 3-4 inches more away from your hole then you would a fox set.

Thanks, the pics really helped a lot. I think I got it. Maybe I can thin em out a little. You can hear em howling all over the place at night. Especially when a train comes through and blows at the railroad crossing. Something about that train sets em off every night.

Check state laws for methods and seasons for trapping coyotes. Here is MO snares on land are not allowed. Good luck getting rid of those yotes!

One of the most important things to remember is SOS(set on sign). If you set a trap 40 yards away from where coyotes are traveling chances are you will never catch it. Get that trap within feet of sign to catch the critter. Also, stay at it. pracitce makes perfect in coyote trapping and the first one is usually tuff. Good Luck.

I would like to add if you are going after coyote, make sure you have the proper size trap to hold him.
Make sure all of your equipment is very clean, including the gloves that you use to handle the traps.
I wouldn't use anything under a 1.75 for coyote, it doesn't take much to hold the average fox.
Depends on the area you live in, but I have seen some pretty big Eastern Coyotes.
Coyotes out West in states such as Texas tend to be smaller.
A coyote will fight a trap with everything he's got, and will pop the jaws out of a 1 1/2 size trap.
Once a coyote gets away from a poorly set trap, he has been educated and will be that much more
difficult to catch same applies to fox. A trap shy coyote or fox will dig up every trap it comes in
contact with or will avoid them all together.
