Beware of Denning coyotes!!!

Post by BCBeagles »

We had a great morning of running, UNTIL, the last race ended in me sprinting into two coyotes chewing on my buddy Dan's 3yr old female!! They ran a rabbit up a brushy ridge and we know those killers are there, but sometimes you get too comfortable. We heard a bay bark from her then screams. I did not think I could still run like that, but adrenaline can do amazing things for you. I rounded the turn and one had her by the mid back and the other was out front trying to get a throat hold. I swear that one looked like a medium size german shepard, at least 50 lbs, the other smaller I am assuming the female. They ran as i got up to about 20 yards and went on the hill to bark out at us as to say, stay out. Oh, I will be back with some sleeping pills for them to the tune of buck shot or equivalent!! I know they are part of the food chain, but really they are just killers laying wait.

This is a great area to run and I will be danged if they will run me out. We will go in and try to find there den and maybe eradicate from there. You can smell those stinking suckers from 50 yds away! They are very large around here, most over 40-45 lbs, some into the 50's easily.

Sophie will be okay, but had several pretty good puncture wounds to deal with. They vet will have her until at least Monday. BE SAFE out there, stay CLOSE to your hounds if at all possible!!! Carry a sturdy walking stick cause I really don't know how I would have reacted if I ran right up on them and they stand up to me, it could happen i guess. I will be carrying a stout walking stick for skull cracking if need be.

You breaking it up and just being there, might be enough commotion to cause the female yote to move her pups.Glad the dog wasn't killed.

I went out last Sunday morning and saw 6 of them together in a low growth field, about 100 yds off the roadway. I thought they would be broken up in singles or pairs. Regardless, I'm considering taking the .223 and caller next morning I drive to that spot and see if I can't get some roadside action.

I don't run away from home without carrying some kind of firearm. A m onth ago we ran one out that I thought was a small deer at first. They are getting bigger.

I dont go run dogs anymore without a gun. Sometimes it may be that I only carry a 9mm pistol or a 22caliber rifle but I will have some type of firearm with me anytime I go in the woods. To many coyotes around and now it's getting time for the snakes to come out down here in Louisiana. Also there are some tough looking Rotweiller/Bulldog mix looking dogs that appear to have gone wild that I have been seeing around our lease and if they mess with my hounds, I gotta have some kind of way to stop em. I use to just carry an old aluminum baseball bat with me but I dont know if I can move fast enough anymore to stop an attack so I leave it in the truck and always arm myself now.

This one won't come in on my dogs again. The den was 100 yards from where I shot him on March 8th while my dogs ran a rabbit. Image

I know they have to have a den somewhere on my running grounds as I can hear them everywhere howling all over the place at night. If any one has any tips on how to find their den, let me know. I talked to a guy a few weeks ago who was supposed to come set out some snares but he never showed up yet.

There are poisons to kill those things or soak some small sponges in bacon grease they will eat and they can't pass it. Dead coyote.

We are organizing a pack of hunters and hounds with big dogs do go back to run them. I am thinking if we can at least kill a few and have them scared as heck when a hound barks, they may stay away from our beagles. I anxious to shed some blood. I think we can have some serious hound action on them!!!

Do not attempt to poison them or put bacon grease on a sponge etc for them to eat unless you want either one of your own hounds or someone elses to die as well. Your dogs will eat that poison just as easily as a coyote will. The only poison you can feed em is a load of buckshot or a 223 to be safe. I knew a guy who used to hang chickens in trees with a shark hook, coyote jump up to bite the chicken and get the hook caught, dead chicken! until he caught the neighboring farmers lab that way. I sure hope you get em. You will only miss once. If you educate a coyote you will never see him again, guaranteed. Make your first shot count because they are the smartest predator in the woods. They do it for a living every day and beating them at their own game is tough. I dont run without a gun. Good luck and good running!
