Re: What makes a ............
What makes a female Beagle worth 14K? How about this, the love of AKC Blue Ribbons! People go to AKC Licensed Trials to bring home an AKC Blue Ribbon. If they come home with anything else then its been a bad day for them. The bitch in question has already won her ribbons and so has her sire and dam, that is not what the 14K is going to get you. It is not going to get you a great hunting Beagle, a great pet, or a member of the family. This bitch will get you 30 maybe 40 great pups and some of those will bring home AKC Blue Ribbons. Some of her pups will become AKC Field Champion. How much would you pay for 30 or 40 great Beagles that are winning AKC Field Trials? Some great bitches have produced 10 or more AKC Field Champions, what is that worth? Just my opinion.
Re: What makes a ............
Mt Man hung himself in his pen, certainly not a genetic problem. Anything can happen, 14K is alot of money, much more than most of us can spend on anything, say nothing about a beagle. But if I wanted to start/enhance my kennel/breeding program, I would spend the money on a good female. Look around, when is the last time you saw anybody advertise an IFC female for lease so you could breed her to your male? There are all kinds of males for public use, IFC, FC, FTC, Nat FC, etc... As far a recouping money, I never keep track of that, it gets a little disappointing. Just try to cover SOME of the expenses. But Dana hit the nail on the head. Shes worth what somebody is willing to pay. Our beagles are cheap, too cheap sometimes. Look what some of the bird dog breeds or labs get. How about some of the breeds that don't do nothing!! WAY more than our high powered well bred rabbit hunting machines. I say good luck to the man/woman selling and the man/woman buying!

Re: What makes a ............
I dont worry what coon hounds, labs, setters, bird dogs go for, apples to apples with beagles only. The breeds that do nothing like snickerfusses or pickerdoodles or whatever, those whackos are the ones who spend 2k plus on a dog and take it to the vet everytime it sneezes and call them their baby and dress em up for Christmas. So no comparisons there either. Beagles to beagles, female to female, never heard of a female selling for that kind of money. Thats where my question comes from originally, .............. a female for 14k. Wish i had 14k to put in my pocket like i put a 5ski in there and take a ride and bring her home on a week trial to see how she does where i hunt, but i dont. Several guys have said she can pound a rabbit, but so can a lot of dogs that never even see a trial. So the response that you have to love blue ribbons sounds like a winner to me. Also you would be better off paying $500 a pup and buy 2 litters of whatever she has and start your foundation that way. 6 pups a litter, 3k per litter, 6k and you have 12 pups to look at. JMO, and as always im full of them.
Just ask me
Also everything has a price limit to it no matter how much you enjoy it for 99pct of us. I enjoy a lot of things but they all have limits.

Re: What makes a ............
thats all great logic , on paper , in reality she is 5 yrs old , if she has 30 or 40 pups for you then you are running a puppy mill , not to mention that is not fair to the dog , at five years old if she has that many pups until she is 10 then you would be breeding her everytime she comes in and that dont leave much time for running , and thats only true if she dont have any complications the first time you breed her lose her , or she is never able to have another litter ,now back too 30 or 40 great pups , i think we all know thats a joke , if she has 30 or 40 pups," maybe" 1 or 2 will be great , 20 or 25 will be average and the rest will be junk ! and thats only if you get lucky and make the right cross ! me personally , if i had $14000 that was disposable i would go buy 13500 lottery tickets and a couple of good rabbit dogs ! males generally go for more money because money can be recovered a little easier without the fear of losing him , not many males die from breeding a female but meny females have died while having pups , that being said , what i said applies to a male also , aint no dog worth $14000 , if someone spends that much they're priorities are really screwed up !

Re: What makes a ............
I honestly think the Beagle breed is the only one that is priced to low. Go try and buy any other dog or even a pup and see what their going for. For what an honest guy puts into breeding a male and female, then raising the pups getting their dew claws removed, shots etc. Then asking $300 dollars per pup, he still losing money. Then we get into the started hound, more time involved ect.... and worth no more then a pup. OK now the finished hound 4-7 years old, this hound circles bunnies all day long in any kind of weather never runs off game, and handles like a dream, sound familiar. Who wouldn't want this hound!! Most of us on this board would die for a hound like this to be in our kennel, but the question is what would you pay for a hound like that!!!!! If this is your hound I promise you it would be worth 10,000 and more. Just look at this through your eyes and not the sellers and it will all fall into place. Then the big question is why would you sell a hound like that!!!!
