I had one killed by coyotes and 3 others chewed up. Put a bounty on them so more people would hunt them

Re: Coyote - Killers or Not
Can anyone that voted say they run where there are no coyotes? If so I wouldn't think those particular votes could count in the stats since there is no possibility for a coyote attack.
Now on my end I do hunt where there are coyotes and (knock on wood) have not had an attack yet.............or at least not that I know of. I was out one time with a buddy and one of his seasoned dogs came flying into us with his eyes wide open and he was acting all freaked out. We were thinking that he had an encounter with a coyote but I have no way of proving that was the case.............just a guess on our part because it was very abnormal for him.

Re: Coyote - Killers or Not
As little as 10 years ago we had very few yotes if any where I live. The population has exploded in that period of time. I had a buddy to kill one 8 years ago in his pasture that he had mounted. That was the first one that I had seen here. Since then I have had several run ins with them and had one of my buddies to have a dog attacked by what the vet said was a coyote. He had several hundred puncture wounds an was covered in sticky saliava from head to toe. More than likely was a coyote because it followed an off game run and he was not a deer runner. The dog is a big tough male that is probably 15 to 16 inches and weighs about 30 pounds. That probably helped him out. I know several others that have had dogs attacked and some were killed.
I have had the stage up on dogs a few times, but as of now have not had one attacked. Two nights in the past few weeks I have heard them yipping on a golf course that is across the road from my house. They are here to stay with the over population of deer it looks like.

Where's the earth shattering kaboom ?
Re: Coyote - Killers or Not
I have hunted well over 50 years. About 30 years ago while hunting coon after dark in the U.P. of Mich my dogs got on a bear. While they were running that bear around in a swamp a coyote joined in and sounded just like he was running with my dogs but behind them. Eventually the bear treed and I went to my dogs and none were hurt in any way. Never seen the coyote and he never stayed around after they treed or at least I never heard it. Last spring I was running 3 beagles in April and a big male coyote came out on the road about 20 yards from me and I tried to run it off but he did not act scared of me but did leave the area. I live in Saskatchewan and have killed hundreds of coyotes over the years with dogs and by calling them with various types of calls. The worst time for trouble is when they are denning and having pups. They are VERY territorial at that time. Guys use various breeds of dogs for decoy dogs on coyotes. I have seen decoy dog videos and most of the dogs used are Mountain Curs and smaller dogs that wont chase the coyotes or trail them by scent very far. The hunter teaches his dog to toll the coyote back to the hunter. The coyotes act aggressive towards these decoy dogs but in all the videos I have watched I never seen a fight unless there were several dogs down and they (the dog)s started the fight. I chased them with Leopard Curs for 30 years and had lots of fights after the coyote was caught, wounded,in a culvert, or corned and had to fight. It may be different with beagles and I am not trying to offend anyone but coyotes get blamed for a lot of things they did not do.
Re: Coyote - Killers or Not
Dingo: I think that is what I am trying to find out. Do coyotes get blamed for a lot more damage than they do? As, I surmise, do hawks, owls, snakes, and any other animal with a negative connotation. I have also had countless incidents of coyotes coming close to me and the dogs but they always seem to do so out of curiosity, not malice.
Now, having said the above, I may be on the verge of changing my vote. I had a small, female beagle get caught on an island in a local lake 3 days ago. My Sportdog GPS gave me a positive fix on the island but the dogs isn't moving. The ice isn't safe to walk on and we tried forcing a row boat out to it but it was too dangerous. As soon as the ice melts, I am going out there. Right now the only culprit I can think of is a coyote.

Re: Coyote - Killers or Not
I had several coyottes come in close on a single coonhound when hunting in Kansas with my brother-in-law one night several years ago but didn't attack it. He was 16 and his first time out coon hunting. He ran back to the truck and that was his first and last hunt at night. We have major coyote populations here in southern Indiana but never had one come in on us. I remember when I was younger the populations were not so major as there was a $3.00 bounty on them. If I remember correctly we took the set of ears into the little post office and collected the $3.00.
Re: Coyote - Killers or Not
Tried that Chappy. It might just work with 125# man like yourself. I will give you a $100 to run down here and bring a blow up raft and go out there for me. The island is only about 300 yds from shore. I have a canoe and/or a row boat but it is just too risky for me. John tops out around 270# and I will hit 220# . The dog isn't worth it. I won't rest until I resolve the issue of what happened on that island. Hope the ice goes away today.

That's a nice offer to help the guy out.
I hope if Chappy comes down you guys can get across and find out what happened to her.

Re: Coyote - Killers or Not
Had 2 young females that were victims of coyotes about 3 yrs ago. Had a neighbor to witness yotes going into a den in a huge lap pile. Couple weeks later the neighbor had his property cleaned up with a bulldozer and under that same lap pile were the collars with my name tags under the laps where the den was located.
The more people I meet, the more I love my dogs!

Re: Coyote - Killers or Not
One female pup trainer killed years ago. And, one real close call where several coyotes came in from different directions and tried to surround two females that had gotten out of their kennel and were running a rabbit behind my house. I was standing on a hill yelling like crazy at the coyotes and for my dogs as the yotes were yipping an moving in on them. All of a sudden my females went quiet and I heard some real fast running through the brush right to me, and here come my females right to me looking back over their shoulders. Too close for me!
When my life on earth is ended....this is all I'm gonna say...Lord I've been a hard working pilgrim on the way!
