cloning?
So you can clone a dog for 50 to 100k....
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/46030252/ ... xZK6_kuBHg
my question is this... Are their any dogs you would clone for this price and if you did is there a dog so awesome that you would make your money back in stud/breeding fees???
also if it was an akc clone then would the ped be the original of the dog or would both parents be listed as the dog the one was cloned from on both sides??

Re: cloning?
Some may diagree but I don't believe any dog is worth that. Regardless of how good it is. I think some of the prices people pay on here are kinda steep at times. I realize different people have different incomes so to some a couple thousand dollars may not be as big a deal as to others. But if I am paying $700 for a dog it had better be a jim dandy. I have seen some real good dogs go but to me I have never seen one worth that. But I guess it is all in how you view your finances. But ayway back to the original question. I view cloning as man trying to play the part of God and I think we should stay away from it.

This is as close as I can get....missed the gender part
Mother

Male 1

Male 2

Even if you cloned a dog for $50k it still would not be the "same" dog. It technically may have the same genetic makeup but there are too many outside influences (nutrition, people, training) to ever be considered the "same" as you once had before.

Re: cloning?
I know this isn't the answer you're looking for but my answer is no dog is worth cloning.........or any animal for that matter. Start messing with nature and eventually we're gonna get bit.........jmho.
That being said if I was ever tempted to try it I agree that it would never be the same dog. You can clone the physical characteristics but I don't believe the personality would ever be exactly the same. Think if all the sudden one day you just dropped down onto earth with absolutely none of the previous experiences you've had in your life...........do you think you would still be the same person???

Re: cloning?
I wouldn't want the animal to be an exact replica of the animal and I understand it will never be a carbon copy but it would have the genetics to get there if you worked with it.. How awesome would it be to give the top ten handelers and trainers the same exact dog and see which ones turns out best. It could mean new training tattics that are scientifically PROVEN!!
THink of the best dog you have ever seen run.. I MEAN EVER! A clone would in fact be like having a littermate out of that dog... How much would you pay for a litter mate that was an identical twin to the best dog you have ever seen?
Also, people on here complain about having to breed an awesome dog to an average dog because nothing else is available or that dogs of yester year were better... Well we could find out...
Final note, people pay 50k on breeding programs over the life of breeding and culling etc... if you could clone a few dogs and do some crosses then you would never have to cull again if you trained right...
ethically, its a mute point because I will never have enough money to do it, nor would I even though i would buy a pup from someone who did....

Re: cloning?
Yes but ethically some people do have and would spend the money on it. Also, once the door is open I think down the road we would get priced right out of dogs altogether. Think about it, you can recreate any dog you want then everyone gets pups from those clones. Not only does it take all the expertise and experience right out of breeding and training dogs but then any idiot with an account full of cash can become the next best "breeder" without having to go to the work of learning the genetics of his dogs for himself.
I know you are kinda doing a hypothetical here but I think it's just playing with fire no matter how you slice it.

Re: cloning?
Once a dog is gone there is no replacing it in my opinion. That is why we have blood lines.

Re: cloning?
so eating cloned food is ok and making live bacteria and viruses genetically modified for antibiotics and immunizations are ok but an animal is not ok to clone?? Its ok to hurt/kill animals to make man safe through testing and shooting them up with every disease possible but this one procedure is where you choose to take a stand?
seems kinda narrow minded to me.. I really don't think God has anything to do with it. Its actually a pretty simple concept really.. Its not like modifying DNA or creating a mutant, its making an exact genetic copy.. Somewhat similar to invitro fertilization that thousands of women get every year except not on a cellular level but on a molecular level..
My question was more about what dog would be cloned the most/worth the most not a biblical debate. I understand your positions on the moral issue I just wanted to see if there was a stand out dog that maybe almost everyone wanted to have or something...

Re: cloning?
Ok I will go along with it. I would say if you could clone a dog and that dog would produce like the original I would clone Dingus McCrae. A vast majority of hunting beagles today go back to him. Seems that he was a major building block of todays beagles. Now as far as color I really like blueticks and redticks. So if I could clone a second dog it would be Hanks Jo Jo Blue. He had a big influence on some different lines of blues also. Gunsmoke is primarily based off of him and the redticks that you see out of Rebels Last Chance all trace back to him as well.

Is that ironic Kelly B. You talk about your clone factory a few nights ago and then this topic comes up!
