COYOTES PICK A DOG RIGHT OUT OF THE RACE

Post by kwolf »

TUESDAY EVENING JANUARY 10, 2012 A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE WENDAL DEHAVEN AND MYSELF (RON PRESTON) WENT TO RUN DOGS JUST A FEW MILES FROM MY HOUSE HERE IN BEAVERCREEK OHIO. WE WERE HAVING SOME PRETTY GOOD RUNNING WHEN I HEARD SOME COYOTES TO OUR EAST START YEPPING AND HOWLLING. I ASKED WENDALL IF HE HAD HIS PISTAL AND HE SAID HE DID, THIS WAS ABOUT 8:00 PM. THEN I HEARD SOME MORE COMING FROM THE NORTH AND I KNEW IT WAS JUST A MATTER OF TIME THEY WOULD BE COMING IN TO BLOW UP THE RACE WE WERE HAVING. BUT I WAS WRONG ABOUT BLOWING UP THE RACE THEY JUST PICKED A YOUNG DOG RIGHT OUT OF THE PACK AND WAS RUNNING HIM BACK TOWARDS OUR TRUCKS. I COULD HEAR THE YOUNG MALE SCREAMING AND I TOLD WENDALL TO SHOOT HIS GUN, HE FIRED OFF A COUPLE ROUNDS BUT WE WERE AFRAID IT WAS TOO LATE. THE REST OF OUR PACK KEPT RUNNING AND DID NOT MISS A BEAT. WE HAVE HAD COYOTES COME IN ON US BEFORE AT THIS PLACE AND BLOW UP THE RACE BUT NEVER HAD THEM KILL A DOG. WE DID NOT FIND THE DOG BUT FROM THE SCREAMING I AM SURE THEY KILLED HIM. NOW THAT THEY HAVE KILLED ONE I AM CONCERNED THEY WILL DO IT AGAIN, WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK? HAS ANYONE HAD COYOTES KILL MORE DOGS IN AN AREA ONCE THEY HAVE KILLED ONE? THEY ARE A BIG PROBLEM EVERYWHERE YOU GO ANYMORE. RON PRESTON

Coyotes are breeding right now , wouldnt be caught dead running after dark ! the are very territorial this time of year ! i would have to assume they will do it again if given the chance !

I know several guys that run dogs in that area, and I have heard some real nightmare stories about the coyotes coming in on the races, even to the piont they run the handlers to the parking lot. I wouldn't run there at night again unless I took some grenades with me. JMO.....it's just to scarey.......

Sorry to hear about your loss. I would continue to run your hounds but stay on top of them as much as possible and have some buckshot. :check:

Hey Ron,
Sorry to hear that. I had yotes kill a female of mine a few years back and when I found her it was not a pretty sight. They ripped her stomach wide open and everything was hanging out of her if it was not missing. They probably will attack again. Your friend Charles Peyton.

In 1993, a friend and I had our dogs running a thicket that held a high number of rabbits. We had a couple of good races and the dogs were starting another run. It was probably 10-11 pm. We heard coyotes start yelping on the far side of the thicket....we didn't think too much of it at the time. Within 5 minutes my friends small female was at the truck shaking and not much later his male came in and had no interest in running. Mine continued the chase, but all at once, nothing. We couldn't prove what happened, but both knew it had to be the yotes. I stayed for several hours in hopes that he would come in. At daylight I through a 38 snub in my pocket and turned an old male loose in an adjacent thicket in hopes that a race my bring the other male in. This was no more than 1/4 mile from where we were originally. He jumped a rabbit and started running while I'm watching eagerly in hopes that my missing hound comes in. Less than 5 minutes after the race began, I felt as though something was watching me (have no clue why, but hair up on my neck kind of stuff), I turned around and there's a coyote standing no more than 15-yards behind me I don't think he had any clue that I was there and as I reached in my pocket he looked at me and ran towards a section of cut woods. I got off 3-5 shots with the snub, but honestly would have had trouble hitting him at the original 15-yard mark.

IMO that yote was there so quick because of the kill the night before. I kid you not it was less than 5-minutes to get him in, and I'm sure he wasn't alone. So, yes, I think that once they've realized the kill of a beagle running was an easy meal and won't soon forget it. That said, here in KY the coyotes tend to move around often. They may stay in an area for a few days, but be no where near for several weeks.....I'm sure it's food related.

Sorry you lost a hound.

If it were me i would take a shotgun and while the dogs were running i would fire a shot in the air every so often to let the yotes know not to come around.

The dogs they use to lure the coyotes in are specially trained to do so. The dog is never in any real danger when they hunt like this. Id say if you have anyone around who has coyote hounds thats your best bet. Hunt them hard and hunt them often. When we dump in a large timber for the 5th or 6th time the coyotes squirt out unpressured as soon as the dogs open on a race because they know whats coming to them. The beagles may have the same effect on them after they have been run with hounds several times.

You might want to get some of the Tracker lights. You can't beat them for $20 each. They help you know where your dogs are all the time and seems like they help keep coyotes away.
