I would like to run an idea by you guys. I have been thinking of making a homemade GPS tracking system.
My plan has three steps:
1) A pay as you go phone or phones depending on the number of dogs (GPS enabled) usually $.99/day used
2) A water/shock proof box (something like a mini pelican case) mounted to the collar
3) An Android or Apple application used to keep track of family members cell phone locations
Download the app on your smart phone and track the other phones/dogs. Do you think this would work?

SCbeagler,
Not sure why, with Garmin and the others do you really think you could do it cheaper? I work for a company that markets GPS trackers to the powersports industry, I've tested a ton of modules to get to the one we use. Our module is water proof, shock proof, dust proof and has an internal battery. It also has a phone app that you can track from you smart phone.
Even with all that I don't think it would have worked any better than my Garmin or the other units and I don't think they would save you money in the long run...remember most all GPS modules have a monthly fee involved with them and if you hit a dead area with your cell phone you can't track until you get a signal.

Re: GPS Tracking Idea
I think the cell phone based GPS system Tracker tried to develop failed because cell phone service is just to spotty. I know I can't depend on my Verizon smart phone everywhere I hunt.Good luck to you if you do try though.
Re: GPS Tracking Idea
Good luck with your idea but I'd be all set with something like that. I'd much rather invest $1200 to track 4 dogs and have it work as long as I keep it. It's a lot easier to buy once, cry once and move on for me.
