shooting and catching rabbits

Post by Rowco Beagle Kennels »

Johnny, Randy, and I went hunting with my cousins Sammy and Jimmy Williams today. Rabbits are still not plentiful on our grounds but we jumped 8, killed 5 with the gun and the dogs caught one. I know some of you told me on another thread to not let the dogs catch rabbits but they do it anyway and they were bred, trained, and culled to catch - just the way it is. The pictures are of Bobby, Johnny, Jimmy, and Sammy Williams. We had a lot of running, laughing, talking, and a general day after Christmas good time.

Bobby that is a heck of a day afield. I don't mind at all if the dogs catch the rabbit. Over the weekend we had one get caught and one was pointer stick straight a minute after I shot him following an hour long run. The one that got caught an older male showed up with the hind quarters and the back. He did protest when he got to me, but we did have the best part of the rabbit to take home.
We are like you here at home. The places we go before deer season is over don't hold piles of rabbits. Jumping 8 in a day is a heck of a day. After the 2nd of January it opens up a little.
Where's the earth shattering kaboom ?

Good hunt!! Seems like this year our hounds are catching more than ever?? Caught 2 yesterday, I can't figure out how to not have them do it. The dogs are run to catch by all meanings of that. I have a couple hounds that are just locking on them then it is over, good problem to have, conserves shells!! :D

Big Dog and Jump n run, I hunt akc run to catch style dogs. My cousins and son-in-law run mostly grade dogs but like us they hunts 52 weeks a year, hot or cold. I shoot very few but our dogs average at least one catch every time out if there is any running. Good to hear from u guys. By the way, my cousin Jimmy in the picture is over 70 and has had foot problems. He still followed the beagles probably 3 miles yesterday. Randy,Johnny, and I are heading out in the morning. Love the trials but prefer down home gun hunting, Bobby

of sour miserable frowns . Glad you enjoyed yourselves .

Thanks Fred for the invitation. May take you up on it. Wish I could hook up with you when Gene comes. Would like to see him again. Been a while since I've seen either of you. I don't know if our old potliquers could handle you and Gene. Maybe I could just watch. We are having pounding running when we find the rabbits so there is nothing wrong with the dogs. There seem to have always been a lot of rabbits around Robeson County. We had a bunch this summer but something happened around Aug - Sept. I have blamed it on the hurricane but I believe it is more than that. There are a lot of places that got hit by the storm but still seem to have rabbits. Have a safe trip home. By the way way I can train or finish those pups for you now if you still need it. Bobby
