Over running checks

I have a male that constantly does this. Most times he comes back and picks the check up, sometimes its quick other times its a couple minutes. He jumps his fair share of rabbits and explodes after them but everytime they turn its a loss for a little bit. My other dog is 8 months old and she is more of a medium speed and tight to the line dog but when she runs with him she just runs to keep up and when he looses the track she usually picks it up then he takes off again. I like the dog but if there isnt a way to get him to slow down some I guess he will have to go. Any help will be appreciated.

He will not slow down and if your female is running to catch up or keep up with him then she is not running her normal or bred in speed. He might blow her up, decide which speed you like and then decide which dog to keep.

I used to have 2 different styles of dogs and it just made things worse and I ended up with a dog that would just stop and go off on its own!!

I agree with both of these statements and I would say figure out which one you want to go with and then also the solo will help a lot!!

I'd run both of them solo alot and see if they both don't clean right up.

are they both the same breeding? if so have to keep an eye on the pups and keep the stlye you like. i dont mind a dog overunning as long as it snaps back to point of loss and goes on with it . you didnt say how old the dog that overuns is if he is young also he will get betterb =less losses.

The one that overruns is 18 months.

Whats the breeding on the 18 month old? I have had a few that did the same. Now let me first say that I am a big proponant of soloing and I soloed those dogs to death and it never fixed the problem. I think the older and more confident they get the worse it may get. Also when he is running with a few other dogs or a larger pack it gets wore.There running style is bred into them for the major part. I agree, figure out what you like and then let one go. I also agree I wouldn't run the younger more conservative dog with the older one..................DH

I doubt the one that overruns will get better even if you solo him
He cant stand being in the back he only wants the front Overcompetitive
in nature and that dont usually change no matter what you do
I babied one for 3 years like that Knowing how he was bred he ran good solo
the minute you put another dog with him it was " Katy Bar the door"
the other dog was NOT going to beat him

Hes Logan elm and big meadows. Ill probably end up letting him go because I like a more conservative dog. I dont trial or anything just rabbit hunt. Thanks for the advice guys.

How many hours a week do you run him? Some males take longer to mature and settle down. I have a male that overruns checks too, but since I started soloing him and running him with good check dogs he has gotten better. I wouldn't run my pup with him, but I wouldn't throw in the towel on him yet unless this is a fault that you can't live with. jmo... Good luck.

jon Cornett has it right. This guy will never change but only get better/worse at what he does. Solo time will not change that. It is just the way he is.

I have seen dogs settle with age and run time. JMO if you like the more conservative hound get rid of him asap and see how your running improves. JMO, if I have to solo the heck out of one to "clean it up", it ain't coming home. They have to have a brain to learn when to run hard and when to slow down, just the way I feel on that, others may disagree.

I am glad this was brought up, we have a female that does the same thing. Hates being the second dog when she gets the track she is gone and has the best voice on a dog I have ever heard just screams. As long as the the rabbit don't turn she can do it but if turns she is screwed. She overruns the check so bad that they are losing it and can't pick it back up. Driving me crazy!!!!!! So I pulled her out and gonna see how it goes. Don't want to sell her but if she the reason for screwing up she is gone. JMO

One of mine was that is half patch hound was "too fast" at first, but because he was a pet I kept him and kept running him. He did settle down after he was about 2.5 yrs or so and now I think he has become an exceptional dog. I was told that faster dogs that over run do settle down with age and experience and found that to be true.
