Is there a big market for San Juan rabbits

Post by John Williams »

I live in Michigan and have some San Juans . Im thinking of breeding them, because some times you cant find them. So let me know if other people use them also, and how hard is it for you to get them.

A market....no. but you could quickly be know as the man with training rabbits. As far as making a buck after feed and time spent in housing the suckers I'd say near impossible!

I don't know about the specific san guan breed but I've not had much luck in selling them from the litters I've had this year. With not being able to move them right after weaning I have found that if you have to feed them any length of time at all you will soon be at a loss. The price of rabbit pellets continues to soar just as dog food has and these just weaned baby rabbits will eat like hogs. I had to butcher the last ones I had. I think it has a lot to do with how far you are located from folks wanting them as there is no way to ship them when folks want them.

I think there is a market in Michigan. Take my name and get in touch with me in April. I will take a dozen or so big enough to survive on their own.

That sounds great Elmer, I have taken my female out three times now and she shows very little interest, she sight ran one today for about 50ft and when she couldnt see it anymore she stopped and came back. I need to trigger her instinct somehow. My male did great today right up untill he took a deer. He jumped 4 himself and ran 3 of them, not sure if scenting got bad but he jumped one and never even opened on it. But ran the others like a champ, strange deal. I jumped 2 others one he ran and one I couldnt get him caught soon enough to get a good track to run. I just need to be able to hunt more often. This male is 3 years old+- and had never run a rabbit in his life untill about 3 weeks ago, so he is doing pretty good for what time hes been out. Loosing confidence that this female will ever take off, I take full blame for that as I let her sit in the kennel for 18months not knowing I should start her at a few months old. Live and learn I guess!!

Will San Juans and Smokey Mtn. Redbacks survive in the wild?
