Advice Please!!

Post by banjerpkr »

I've got a 19 month old male who is coming on great. He's got a good nose and runs a track awesome. The problem is he can run a track backwards just as good!! :mad2: On a tough check he'll turn around and backtrack bad! Anybody ever had any luck breaking a dog from this and if so, how? Thanks for all your help. Merry Christmas!

Tough one banjerpkr. Does he do this when running with a pack or just when you solo him? Running him with a pack might help if you've always soloed him. Also, it might help to try to be there when he starts back tracking to get him turned around and on the right track. I am no expert on this but there are a lot of guys on here who have great experience raising and teaching hounds. I'm not sure if a shock collar would be helpful in this situation or not. Perhaps if done in the right way? I'll defer to the more experienced guys on here for that one.

On a side note, what kind of banjo you picking? I'm a bluegrass music man from way back. :D

I'd say give him a little time and that should do the trick. Nice banjo! My brother picks banjo. I've always played mandolin and guitar though! Best to you ;) .

When he's not doing it right shock him. If shocking him would make him stop running forward then deer breaking would make him stop running all together right. One thing is for sure let him keep doing it and he will never stop. Sometimes its all or nothing. Jmo

iv turned beagles into poodles with a collar but have never stopped one from running a rabbit. the may not hunt for a little while but encourage them and they will learn what you like and should try to please her. be persistent and patient. good luck and merry christmas.

Get rid of it and get another dog. One that cannot tell front from back will never get better.

It depends on how much experience the dog has. I've seen inexperienced dogs that would run it backwards but would eventually learn. Before I owned a shock collar I would stand on the line and wait. If he ran it backwards I would whip him or what ever it takes to stop him from running the wrong way. A boot in the butt a few times may do the trick. Some learn and others don't.

Appreciate all input, thanks fellers! And yes he does it with a pack. Danny we have 4 CD's but we haven't been traveling for a couple years now and I have no idea if there are any copies of any of them left anywhere
