A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
How long should you give a dog before culling it ?
A great deal depends on your experience with a bloodline, how high your expectations are, and how much time you have invested into the hound. Many hounds end up culled or worthless in the kennel that could have been nice in the right hands.
For me I have two critical times......6 months and 1 year.
Pup has to start, show intelligence, desire, and natural ability by 6 months. The dog must continue to improve and meet MY expectations for a 1 year old hound.
A blanket time frame doesn't always fit.....a dog showing spurts of brilliance usually gets more attention.

I agree with good-dog Northway, Northway, Buzzsaw and more Northway/Buzzsaw on the way even tho I run other stuff those would top picks and what I build around
Hitman and Gunsmoke. More desire than ou'll know what to do with. I have seen some of these dogs that couldn't walk at the end of a rabbit hunt and is more than ready to hunt the next day. Absolutely no quit!!!!
My brother and I have a line of grade hounds that are fast and have control and they do not need run solo all the time to bring a rabbit by you with it's ears pinned back and literally running for it's life. He is breeding a couple of them in the spring and if you would like one he will give them away to hunters. They are very balanced dogs and can get it done with anyone's hounds. We are keeping a male and female and will give the rest away. We have had there parents and know what they came from. They are big dogs though, some will go over 15. Good luck with your search.
I as always would suggest a hound that is linebred with I.F.C. Maravic's Blue Ninja and his sister Branko's Conna as the cornerstones. They were of course out of Branko's Jack of all Trades who sired these several dogs;Heli-Prop,Hard Rock,Lumberjack,Sassy Sally,Poetry in Motion, and Jackpot.Jack's influence was great and you can also keep some of the traits with some of these son's and daughter's blood.
I am primarily a gun hunter / pleasure runner and these hounds bred this way excell on cottontail, swampers and hare. They do a good job on a cottontail but sometimes do hit a little harder than some might like. They can absolutely put it on a hare or swamper and drive em like a deer race.
Some years ago a beagler I was talking to mentioned off-hand that guys in the Mid-West didn't really like Ninja all that much when he was being trialed as they didn't think he had enough foot. All I can say to that is I saw him and his littermate Mimi or Missy [? ] run at the International Beagle Trial of Champions in Harwick,Vt. in 1994 and they placed 2'nd and 3'rd in a combined pack that was run for about 6 hours.
I don't trial much at all but I placed a young bitch at the Sothern Large Pack Championship Trial on swampers at Mel Faust's in Louisianna that had never been in a Large Pack before. This past October I enterd two females in a Large Pack on Hare trial that had never been trialed before and took 1'st and 3'rd [ after they ran them 7 1/2 hours ]. I would say these dogs generally have all the foot they need to compete without getting foolish.
Jack Blum of Ontario,Canada had great success breeding bitches out of Ninja to I.F.C. Haunted Hill Shaker. Some of these dogs carried the Prefix--Squirrell Creek or Three Jays and a bunch of them finished.
Two studs who I think would be wise to consider if desiring this bloodline are I.F.C.Beaver Creek Blue Max and F.C. Side Hill Keuka Blue.Max is linebred Ninja and Ali-Baba top and bottom and Keuka is Ninja and Jackpot.Jackpot was never bred to much but produced some very nice dogs.
I would be remiss if I left out I.F.C. Greenwell's Reggie and F.C. Turbo Charged Thunder Blue. They have the Turbo,Prop blood and their mother is double Ninja breeding.I own a female out of each and like them very much--both made Little Pack Rabbit Champions.
Mark Truedell from Up-state N.Y. is advertising two Ninja grandsons [ out of Blue Moon ] at stud on the General Services board.I think these two should reproduce very true to that bloodline of hounds as well.
