How can I get my beagle pup to not run off from me when he's not leased?

For any new beagler I recommend they get some books about beagle training and rabbit hunting.
1. Beagle Basics-Training of the Hunting Beagle by Bill Bennett
2. Secrets of a master contton tail hunter by Dave Fisher
These two books cover about everything for hunting and they contain some good stories and enjoyable reading.
You may want to get one about the beagle breed in general to learn about the hazzards and pitfalls of beagle ownership. It aint always easy.
Be positive, patient and persistent...it is rewarding
Good Luck and welcome to the wonderful world of beagleing.

Re: beagle running off
I'm fortunate to have a fenced in back yard. When pups are 3-4 months I let them out of pen and then daily use a whistle and dog treats. When pups are across yard from me, I blow whistle and call them, kneel down. When they come charging to me, I make them sit, then give them a treat. Doesn't take but a few days. Now when they are older, they respond beautifully to whistle. When I hunt I like to keep a visual on my dogs until we jump one. I talk to them a lot, encouaging them to "Find a rabbit, look, look, look!" If they range out and don't come right when I call, I blast on the whistle a couple of times and they come high balling it to me.
I have them sit to put lease on them or whatever. We train bird dogs to have manners, why not beagles?
I like my dogs to hunt with me, not me with them.
I have had too many experiences with other hounds that just hunt on their own, then when it's time to quit, we spend a lot of time trying to catch the dogs.
Just a personal thing. When I call (whistle) they come! If not, a little "tone" on the e-collar reminds them to "move it"!!!

Re: beagle running off
Good post by D. Gross. I got out of beagling 2 yrs ago, but bought a little flushing dog to keep me in the woods. I've learned what it's like to have a dog that listens, hunts close & comes to the whistle; compared to my hound days where we just dropped the tailgate. I've really been missing running the hounds lately & have been thinking of getting back into it. When I do I plan on doing some real serious handling training. I think (for me) it would be a great to have beagles that hunt close & with me. I've even been thinking of using them on Grouse!
Also, a while back there was an article on a guy out east (it may have been a cover story, too) who had gotten out of bird dogs & had taken up beagling. He was training his hounds like bird dogs. I thought I might contact him to see if he'd found any particular breed to be more tractable to this type training.
thks,
