Thanks for the replies. I have only had rabbit dogs a couple of months and i have a dog that hunts pretty good and jumps some rabbits, but he is 4 years old and i didin't know if he was better because he is older or just born better.I get on this site every day, lots of great beaglers on here learned a lot from here from this forum.

I agree with most of the post.I have owned 1 true jump dog in over 35 years of beagling. owned and culled hundreds of dogs through the years. She had it from day one.She was born with it.I have owned several above average hunting dogs.Several average ones and my share of sorry ones.I gun hunted her with several high profile dogs one year.Dogs that placed at the ARHA world hunt and AKC midwest field champions. She was a grade dog.Through several trips with top notch dogs she jumped 53 out of 72 rabbits jumped.Usually 8 to 10 dogs on the ground at all times. She neverwas put in a trial. I will never own another like that and I don't expect to. Having a once in a lifetime dog was the worst thing to happen to me.I currently have a June female and a Rileys rollings trail female. They could not touch her on her worse day.... As I have aged I have learned to settle for less and have a little more fun with my dogs. Still miss that dog to this day...

That is so very, very true. If you have never owned a dog such as she, how would you know what one is like. Once you have owned one, nothing else will satisfy. Don't give up. There are more out there. You say you have done a lot of culling. Keep it up brother. Don't settle for less and somewhere you will find another one.

Jump dogs are hard to come by. I have 2 1 5 and 1 11. Don't know if I'll get anymore. I also think they are born not made. Just because a hound hunts hard don't mean its a jump dog. Seen several hounds hunt hard and a jump dog will follow them into the same brush and jump a rabbit. I also believe a true jump dog will start a hare or cottentail one just as good as the other.
