Rattlesnake bite ?

Post by Wilson »

I hear people getting dogs bit by copper heads and everything seems to be ok most of the time.. But what do you do when one gets bit by a rattlesnake. Is it a lot worse than a copper head.

Yes , Most of the time a beagle does not pull through a rattlesnake bite. It does happen but not often.

I had an old female get bitten by one a few years ago and her head got very big, eyes swollen shut and bloody/green puse can out of the bite. My vet gave her many shot and she got better but she lost all her hair off of her head. It is pretty rough. I also had a friend that had on bitten in the neck area and he about lost her. It is pretty nasty. They were snake bitten but not sure what kind.

Rattlesnake bites are far more deadly on dogs than copperheads....but a well placed copperhead bite can kill a dog in just minutes. I know a man whose beagle got bit in the neck, the dog rolled off the bank it was on and was dead by the time he got to him. The copperhead hit the dog in just the right spot.

there are about 6 rabbit pens in my area within 30 miles owned by diffrenat people. all that have ran dogs in the summer in them have dogs bitten and killed by rattlers. never seen a beagle live longer than an hour after being biten. cotton mouths can survive but fleah rots badly get very very sick. copperhead can be nastey too but not quite as bad. why i dont run form late may til end of sept unless i go to my mountain place.

Jeffers Vet Supply @jeffersvetsupply.com now offers a rattlesnake anti-venom for dogs, but it is expensive. None the less, it might be worth it in areas where they are plentiful.

I researched the rattler vaccine because we hunt in heavy rattler populations in eastern NC. If I read it right it is not very effective for timber rattlers and other eastern US snakes. Does anyone know if that is true? We have lost 2 dogs last 3 years. Bobby

I have a dog that was bit by a big rattler. Happened to be close to the truck and I immediately loaded him and was on my way to the vet. I called the vet on my way there and they had everything ready. Dog stayed a week and $1000 bill but he lived through it with no lasting effects. Vet said the dog took more venom then he'd ever seen a dog take. The dogs head swelled more then I would of thought possible and it was very nasty.
