Another Copperhead bite!

Post by Marty Allen »

I was out running this morning and had a great race that had been going on for about an hour. The dogs had finally put the rabbit in a hole. I had two of the dogs on the leash and was waiting on the third to come out of the brush pile... I saw her come out but then she went back in still hunting. I called her again and she finally came out so I leashed her and started to the truck..I noticed she did not want to walk and was kind of being pulled along by the other dog on leash with her. I just thought she just did not want to quit hunting...we got to the house just a short ways away and she was down in the crate I knew something was wrong at this point. I got her out put her in the pen and started checking her out, thats when I saw the fang marks on the inside of her back leg. I don't know when she got bit she never yepped or anything. She has been laid up all day but when I fed a few minutes ago she got up and came out of her house ate, got a drink and went back in and laid back down. I think she is going to be ok...leg is really swollen.

Hate to hear that...i've heard from a number of friends that they have been seeing a lot of snake out here in middle TN. At least it was a copperhead and not a rattlesnake.

Give her 3 to 4 cc of penicillen for the next couple of days. She should be ok. This is to keep infection from setting in. She should be able to fight off the poison on her own if she is healthy.
