Involving Youth

Post by RabbitDawg »

What does your club do to promote the youth involvment? We have a few 12-15 year olds that just joined and want to keep their involvement in the trials and hounds. Any recommendations?

Well, you could have a youth hunt or you could let the youth run one of your hunts... Assign specific tasks that let them be in charge (with supervision of course) and let the run the show.

We had a youth hunt this spring and it was great everyone had a good time and we had about 17 or 18 kids with dogs , several club members brought grandkids and we had hotdogs grilled for the kids it was nice!

Thanks for the replies. We are going to plan a youth hunt. Can you tell me the specifics of your hunt? Example, was there an entry fee? Did the dog ran, have to belong to the youth? Or can they use someone elses dogs? Do you have more than one youth hunt/year?

Thanks again

I'm going to suggest at our next club meeting that we have a youth hunt. Our youngsters are our future for the sport.

I will be happy to print the results of youth hunts in The American Beagler. Give these kids something to look forward to!

We had our rules simple, $5.00 entry fee all hounds went on the bench and in the field for one price. One entry level champions, grands and opens, did not matter, we ran 30 minute cast with kids handling the dogs and young judges judging we used regular Lp score rules with five dog cast had age of 2 to 17 , we had alot of door prizes donated for give away and raffle. All kids got a medallion, free hotdogs and soda that was why we had a $5.00 entry fee . It was great I hope we have another one. One way we could improve would be consider a 7:30 or 8:00 deadline for the kids.
