did you update the collar itself too, not just the handheld held unit?

I just got a new dc40 collar back from garmin. My old one died out of the blue. I called them and they had me send it to them and within 12 days they sent me another collar back. I was very happily surprised.

Sounds like the collars are bad and need to send back. I had a 40 when they first came out. It lost signal 5 times in 2 weeks and never picked back up. I bought it from Cabela's and sent it back to them for a dc 30. I knew the 30's at least worked. The dude at Garmin told me they lost signal when the dogs swam the creek. I told him the coon hound guys are going to be pissed then. I have changed antenna's on my dc 30 collars because they went bad, got ultra tuff antenna's from Bright Eyes company and they have better distance now.

What kind of distance increase did you see with the Bright Eyes antenna beyond what the Garmin one had when new? I've seen from approx 650-800 yds before I lose my signal, I'm wondering if I'd gain much if anything with the Bright Eye antenna.

I have done the update on the handheld (Astro 220) but how do you do the update on the actual collar (DC 40)?

The signal seems to hold better without losing it with the other antenna. These antenna's are probably about 5 inches longer than the stock Garmin.
To update the collar, plug the handheld into the computer, go to dog list, high light the collar you want, hit enter, show info, menu, sub menu, upgrade dog unit. Hopefuly that can make sense for you, those are the notes I had wrote down.
