Running when running seasons close?

Post by Bellmorekennels »

Hey guys , here in Ny, we are legally allowed to run until april 15th, and then again after august 15th. The question I have, if other states have closed running seasons also? And do you guys still run and take a chance at getting a caught, which would bring me to the next question, how much of a fine are we talking about, if conservation officer would give a violation?

I don't run during the closed season. I wouldn't want to take the chance of my dog finding a nest of babies. Im sure he would gobble them up before I could get to them. There isn't enough rabbits in my area as it is. I would hate to hurt the population for when its legal. As far as the fine, im not sure. I know the dnr can mess with you in ways other than money.

In NY you can run after April 15th on private property but you must have permission of the land owner to run rabbits during the closed season. Personally I think running during the closed season when rabbits are breeding hurts the rabbit population. I still do it with permission on private property but I don't put too much pressure in one spot. I may run one location one day and then not come back for a couple of weeks to the same spot so not to put too much pressure on nursing doe rabbits. The DEC in NY does not screw around, You get caught running on public land during the off season and you will be sorry. Its not just the fine but they can suspend your hunting license and even take your dogs. ..Thats just my opinion....dh

I usually do not like to run april, may and june , cause ticks are terrible, and would not want to kill and small rabbits, and DEC is really tough around me , so I rarely run during the summer, but just trying to see if local states have similar laws, like NJ, CT , as i know couple spots in NJ to run, but not sure of laws.

Correction, You can only run on club grounds in inclosures after April 15th in NY. My good Friend Andy P. Pointed that out to me. He wanted to make sure that Bellmorekennels doesn't get locked up....DH

I run my at least 2 or 3 times a month on the off season.I wouldnt own a hound if I had to keep him locked up just to gun over.I do take a break after the seaon ends but not for long.I dont think there is a law where I live about running but even if there was I would be EXERCISING my dogs if any one asked.I think it is cruel to keep a hound penned up for a long amount of time.

I run 'em year-round. When it gets hot, I'll only take them out early or late to avoid the heat.

PA lets us run all year.

There are UKC clubs in NY that hold hunts in the "off season" and they run on public land, they get some sort of permit, I'm not sure the particulars but it maybe something to inquire about. Or join a club.

Here in Michigan we have a quite season from April 15th - July 8th, but I was told I can get a permit to run during this time for training for private land only, I am going to look into this and see about getting one this year, I cant see penning up my dogs for that long and not run them, I have 102 acres that I use just for running (no shooting aloud, My choice)

We run as we please year round in Alabama. I think not supposed to during Turkey season which is very short. Keep yourself out of snake and alligator infested places as much as possible or have dogs that won't stay at a hole and will come when called.LOl

One of the best places to run for any of you that don't have places is golf courses when its raining or as some do at night.
Also little league ballparks. I know some that do this and like it. Drive by when its raining and see them sitting in a dugout!
