I'm not saying for a second that there are no good patch hounds. I was just stating my experience with them. I have noticed whenever someone on this board, brings up a line of dogs, you never hear about th bad ones. The fact is, no line is perfect, and in my experience they lacked nose. would love to get together and see yours run. I love a dog with hard hunt, and that is one thing all the patch hounds I have seen had.

Reddog ,
Those two don`t want to get tangled up with the Island dogs  although I think we should just pick um up dogs and all n take them there this OCT. You are absloutly correct FULL SPEED ahead.

Wagner, I really don`t know how mine could handle the snow and frigid temps.

No reflection on you BUT any one says they got dogs can run no losses 3/4 hrs minimal this and that must have pitter potter dogs that open every time they take a breath and smell every track a bunny makes.

I have been out here seen the rabbit ,hounds make loose walk right by a the rabbit . It is sitting in a clump of grass three feet from them and they can`t smell it. Like Reddog says if it don`t want to run it ain`t gonna run.

Dace g I counted 26 seconds from the time the rabbit came out till HONDO hit the track, NOT BAD my friend.
Come run

my dogs are not perfect, they have loses just like everyone else's beagles. I run what I would call upper medium speed dogs. I like a dog with foot. I got one now that runs head up a lot of the time, and he is more on the fast side of things. the one thing I know for a fact is that they have been able to run every weekend here in michigan, and that is all that matters to me. Is it always pretty? no, but can they move the track and get the rabbit around, yes. I have owned dogs in the past who couldn't run every weekend here in michigan. It is not much fun to go out with dogs, who can't run because it is to cold or the snows to crusty or whatever the case maybe. you will never here me say my dogs are the greatest, I just have rabbit dogs, and they do what every rabbit dog should be able to do. that is run a rabbit whenever i can go, if they can't I don't feed them.

Jwagner,
I came to Mi from Mo when I was ten yrs old. Grew up around Chelsea, hunted all the State land in the Waterloo area snd Jackson area. Had rabbit dogs seemed like it didn`t matter what the weather was they ran bunnies. Us seven kids ate every thing I could kill and I can`t recall how many rabbits I got. Had grade mostly until the 60`s then got into reg. Dosent make them run any better. Seems as though the hounds today lack something, they can`t run in cold and frigid weather like they used to. There is nothing wrong with Patch hounds there just like every thing else GOOD AND BAD. You just need to find the right one. Good huntin.

Come run
Almost fer got, I~LL BE THERE DAVE AND TIM, we`ll just set your dog boxes on top of mine and keep goin

Tsa la gi I sure would love to catch that bus up to the Island.. I have missed going and seeing everyone and I really miss watching my sorry Patch pooches dawddle around on them hare... I thought I had about rurnt my dogs on them hare.. I couldn't get em to turn in a 40 acre field when they got home and tried to run them cottontail. I have to admit I'm a fair weather hare hunter as I have never ran them in the snow or frigid cold.. As for the cottontail running I'm in agreement with all of you about the rabbit being the master of the hounds.. Can't explain it but around here you can jump four rabbits on the same 10 acre cutover and the dogs one day may run the hair off of em and the next day may not run them well at all.. I've seen mine run what they jump and can't run one that I put them on to save em.. I don't think their nose or brain comes and goes near as much as the conditions. Just remember if all else fails blame it on the hole.....LOL

Preacher I been a little busy. some of it self-inflicted and some of it inherited.. LOL Rebel is doing just fine.. I still haven't figured out just why you let him go.. I'd like to breed him too and you could sure get a pup or two if I do..
Well I thought we had all let bygones be bygones with the "Chicken Sheeet' episode but just like most manure it is hard to rid yourself of that smell, or lack of it.. I did take mine to a farm where they raised Turkeys and had some excellent running.. but the owner told me the Turkeys had been constipated for a week before we got there. All I could say was "Really, No Crap" well I guess you get the picture..
This post started as were Patch dogs to fast to run cottontail? I'd have to say yes on some days, but most days they are just right...for me anyway..

Are patch beagles to fast to run on cotton tail rabbits?
Your post seems to suggest that all Patch hounds are identical in speed and line control......

Of course there are some Patch dogs too fast to run cottontails...... if you like a Medium speed hound that runs without over shooting the line! There is no such thing as an entire line of fast hounds that don't have several that are too fast for their own good.

Of course there are some Patch hounds that do an excellent job running cottontails.

Your question can't be answered without knowing what speed and style of hound you like........If you want a hound to run a medium speed and lock to the line, you will likely need a UBGF bred dog, (Rob's Diamond, Shorts Pro), If you want a dog that's faster speed (which of course causes some overrunning)then you will like SOME of the Patch, Branko, style hounds. The faster the dog, the harder it becomes to find one that doesn't cause losses and checks.

This is just my experiance with patch hounds; In 1995 i wanted AKC dogs so i went to patch in 18 months i owned 16 patch hounds anywher from 8wks to 5 and none of them would ever handle and ranged way off and what i owned done real good on big game where they could open up and stretch out but was sloppy on cotton tail I thought i may have gotten a bad start but all i ever run with here was like that But now with that said all mine come from Jack Palmer which his came from the kennel in New York I just had a bad start i guess JMO

patch dogs are not line straddlers ,,,but mine can and will slow down and move a track across bad places ,, now i seen some that didnt have a clue what a check was ,they never returned to point of loss ,, i got no need for them type of dogs.

i do have loses , bunches of holes as the places i run are full of holes.
