field trial hunts

Post by Kerry Nelson »

I need some advice from you PRO Beaglers, after hunting season (feb28) my partner and I would like to go and watch some Field Trials and see how it is done. Are people allowed to come and spectate without entering dogs? And where are some of events taking place in March that are close to Maryland? Is there a yearly schedule and how do we get info? Sorry if these are stupid questions but we are interested in watching. Thanks Kerry McGrath Road Beagles

Here you go Kerry. Each Format does allow spectators at their trials. Now, all you have to do is figure out which ones you like to see. Each format has their own website with a schedule of upcoming trials. AKC, UKC, NKC, PKC. Search each site till you find what your're looking for.

I prefer NKC little pack but thats what type of hounds I run. You have to match the style or type of hound you run with the right format.

The only ones ive ever been to in MD have all been BRACE trails. I can never enter my dogs because i run more of a little pack style.
The brace hounds are slower but its fun to go and meet new people and see all the diffrent hounds.
Ive actually been to a couple over there on the eastern shore, Pretty close to salisbury.
HBCH loko go fancy

Young Guns big Red Casino

Depends on where you are in Maryland. There are several UKC hunts that are in the southern Pa, Maryland, WV, Va. area.
Most AKC clubs in that area are probably going to be pretty conservative even if it is a pack trial.

I am not a fan of brace trial and of only been to a few. they are split the dogs into pairs or trio, and they only run against the other dog or 2. depending on the trial the dogs may or may not hunt, in which case they are kept on a leash until a rabbit is jumped by the handlers/marshall.... then the dogs are released on the line and are judged on the accuracy they track the rabbit, often braces travel less then 100 yrds and then another pair of dogs will be placed on the same line and continue the "run". after the first series all the dogs are ranked and some eliminated and then it's kinda like a tournament they match the dogs up but the #1 dog will always be #1 unless he is beat head to head. It's not for me, but I believe my description to be accurate.
