Shy pups and kennels

Post by jfields »

I had a pup in an above ground kennel and had to crawl in to catch him. I put him in a chain link kennel on the ground and he is still a little shy but came up to me and even jumped up on my leg while I was petting another dog to get his. :???: I never thought an above ground kennel would make that much difference.

I would have to say it's the dog not the kennel.

I agree its the dog but why the big difference. I have raised pups on wire before with no problems also. I didnt raise this pup , I bought him at 7 months old. I have no clue what he was raised on. All I know is he acts a lot better on the grond.

We picked up a few dogs over the weekend and they were all in above ground kennels. Two of them are fine, but there is one who is the shyest, most timid thing I've ever seen in my life. It's like she's been abused and I don't think that's the case. We have her in the house right now trying to fatten her up and get her used to us. I'm going to try her on a chain for a few weeks before we put her in the kennel with the other dogs. I have a feeling that she will either be the best dog we ever had or a great pet for someone else. She may be scared, but she watches everything. Nothing gets past that dog.

Just my opinion but if you have one that is shy and he's in an above ground you will always have to reach or go in to get him which is intimidating to them.If he is on the ground it does give him an opportunity to come to you when he fills comfortable being around you.I think as goodpickens said below if they are super shy you may want to bring them inside.I have herd this works well if you can do it.Thanks!!

I agree. I raise my pups in an above ground kennel and they are very friendly the first few weeks. However, once I start reaching to get them for worming and shots they start to shy away and make it difficult for me to reach them.
By putting them on a chain they are not threatened and every time you come out to visit you are feeding, watering, or petting them. They soon associate you with pleasant things.

Does a female being in heat make her more skittish? Our new gyp that's so scared of everything just started last night. I'm wondering if the move combined with hormone changes could be the cause for her freaking out at everything.
